Hello, South American friends.
  9:30pm
Tom L:

Narada Michael Walden + Tony Levin = sickest rhythm section.
  9:30pm
mrmucho:

yeah the drums are great on this
  9:31pm
PB:

Seems like I'm the odd man out here but, to me, that Fripp track was "prog rock" at its worst.
Avatar 9:31pm
Dave M:

The song with Peter Hammill singing on it is even more twisted. It was hard to choose .

killer! thanks for the Genesis. is that Phil Collins on drums? what a show that must've been.
Avatar 9:35pm
Dave M:

Caught that bleep perfectly I must say. "I'm not full of..."
Avatar 9:35pm
Dave M:

Yes indeedy. Phil Collins.
  9:38pm
G:

Back in NYC, typical weird proggy time sig (7/8 or 7/4)
  9:39pm
G:

Genesis was a little rough on some songs, during the Lamb tour. Boots of many shows are available.
Avatar 9:40pm
Dave M:

Yeah, 7/4. And maybe some 7/8.
  9:40pm
damien:

i just find it funny that i have asked Dan Bodah to play "Being It" a few times. And he's never played it!
Avatar 9:41pm

I'm sure he has his reasons.

another funky time signature. Free Design. some studio pro no doubt.
Avatar 9:54pm

For sure. That's a really really difficult song. No way were they playing it themselves.

Thanks, Ike. Sorry, cheri, I know nothing of Mila Kunis.

PB:

Getting back to "prog rock" bands, my recollection is that all of the better known 70s prog rock bands were British (Yes, ELP, Strawbs, Genesis, King Crimson, etc). I can't recall a single well-known American prog rock band (but then again it is not exactly my favorite genre).
  10:13pm
b:

Ah, memories of Jade Warrior...yes, that's a very good thing....
  10:13pm
Parq:

You are most welcome, Dave. Your choices are choice, as usual. I did miss hearing "The True Wheel", but then, hearing Circle's delirious version of "Here Come The Warm Jets" a couple of times lately has taken some of the sting out of that. Just gonna sit back and let your selections wash over me.
  10:14pm
G:

There was the Canadian band Rush, and there werre some US prog imitators -- Clay Pigeon is a big Starcastle fan, the best known prog-imitating US band in the mid 70s.
  10:19pm
Spike in SF:

Regarding American Prog: I was talking to one of my younger metalhead friends the other day, and he was raving about how he'd just discovered Kansas, of all things. And ya know, some of the EARLY Kansas wasn't half-bad American prog, in a way. They were a guilty pleasure for me even back then, but something of a pleasure nonetheless.
  10:21pm
b:

Spike, Kansas definitely had their moments before they got arena disease. As for American prog rock bands, I'd argue that some of Santana's early records would certainly fit, in its own multiracial/multiethnic way.
  10:23pm
PB:

Early Kansas, who knew. I'll take your word for it but I am remain highly skeptical.
  10:24pm
G:

I was gonna mention Kansas, but many may think them too poppy for true prog.

Ironically, newer prog revival ,usic in the last 20 years has many major American exponents near the top of the lists of people who care about these things. Spock's Beard is an LA band.
  10:25pm
G.:

Dave, do you remember ever playing a track from a band from Argentina?
  10:25pm
PB:

I always thought I knew a lot about rock/pop music but G totally puts me to shame.
  10:26pm
12539:

Dave, Pitchfork says, "...at the behest of...Michael Gira, the band added "/Family" to its name when it followed (sic) signed to his Young God Records imprint."
  10:27pm
PB:

Why did most bands named after a place suck (Boston, Kansas, Chicago, UK, etc.)?
Avatar 10:31pm
Dave M:

I'm sure I've played bands from Argentina, but you've gotta give me a little more to go on...
  10:32pm
Destroit:

Don't forget the ultimate suck...Alabama.
Avatar 10:34pm
Dave M:

I would claim that Chicago was pretty good up through maybe their second LP.
  10:35pm
Destroit:

Oh, and great show Dave. Sorry to pollute it with an Alabama reference ;)
  10:36pm
G.:

I was thinking of bands like La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros, Invisible, stuff from the 70s. It's rather late here and I gotta go. Great show, thank you!
Avatar 10:37pm
Dave M:

@Destroit: It's OK. You can say whatever you want here. Almost.
  10:38pm
PB:

Gotta check out, thanks Dave. Fun show.

Damn -- I'm tuning in late to learn I missed the Prog segment of the show. Today ScottW played all 4 sides of Tales From Topographical Oceans -- simultaneously! With the marathon out of the way, the DJs are free to show their true prog roots.

Dave, I dug through your archives hoping to find more Lothar. Had to go back to Dec 07 and my sound file converter claims there's no audio in that file. *sigh* And *I* have a turntable but no vinyl frm them! It's an imperfect universe. And thanks for the Amon Duul.
  11:35pm
ken from seattle:

wow, two of my favorites in the same set.... i've been a lothar fan forever (have both the lps on vinyl, and 1st on cd) and saw v-effect open for frith in the early 80's in b'more.
  11:35pm
Droll:

Why so defensive?! Prog is one of the more durable genres of rock, like power pop, and FMU has multiple power pop shows. Prog is not just for guys in trench coats tapping their foot in 13/8 time. There's also 7/8, 3/4, and 9/8.
  11:38pm
b:

I'm pondering whether my trench coat should be insulted...
  11:45pm
Catty:

@Droll: Not to mention 5/4 and 11/8.
  11:47pm
Droll:

I love prog, really! (I just wish it weren't a black hole for humor)

Listener Bob (2907):

Listening on the archives -- good to hear you back on the air!

Listener Gregory:

Very much enjoyed the show (on the archives). Just a correction to your announcement of the Cannonball Adderley tune. He plays alto sax on the cut; Hank Jones is the pianist.
