They don't have catsup where you are? I feel like I have too many options these days. 57 varieties in some stores...

and so many people still living on farms.

Now, farms are owned by giant corporations, staffed by immigrants. Ma & Pa Kettle are history.

True! My grandmother was a farm girl and always talked about hating how much work it was.

My mom and dad grew up on farms. They bought a house when they were near retirement age. There was a decent amount of garden space on the property with fruit trees, raspberry bushes, hazelnut trees, grape vines, etc. To them it was heaven, especially since it was theirs.

That's very cool! I sort of wish I owned some land. We theoretically own our house, but... well, the bank has a lot to say about that, too.

Most of what I know about farming comes from watching the Farm Family series on RiffTrax, but it looks like very hard work, not only for the adults but also for those school age kids who are old enough to help with the sunrise chores

My farm job when I was in my teens / early 20s was to replace a son who grew up and moved away, and the family needed to replace the labor. Mostly working with goats, but there were horses and chickens, too.

My parents had to work on farms as prisoners of the Nazis during WWII. That was a horrific time for them as teenagers.

Here's a picture of my parents in their 80s about 18 years ago:

My grandmother had a garden in her back yard, and we knew that something was wrong when she didn't want to keep her garden anymore. She lived into her 90's, but I don't recall how old she was exactly. (Grandmother on my mom's side, I should say.)
