I'm excited to hear this California '99 record. I don't know what to expect.

I need to pick up that four disc set. I do love that movie, and the soundtrack quite a bit.

Okay, I'm in love with this album already. What the what? This is fantastic!

I feel like a lot of his extra soundtrack music is coming out in foreign countries since his death during covid.

We just started selling records at my bookstore, and thus, we started buying records to sell. The first box had a bunch of Vangelis in it. That felt like a good start to me.

I have an odd Vangelis obsession.

I came to him late, and largely because I loved "Blade Runner" and realized he did a lot of other music, too. Fortunately, his records were easy to come by for many years, so I have four or five now. But I wish I'd started collecting sooner.

The weird "Pac-Man-esque" sounds are great!

I have a handful of his albums on LP, but because I mainly listen to him while driving, I have most of his work on CD :)

I'm probably in good company here, but when I hear this soundtrack, I can only be impressed. I'm baffled by people who find this movie (and the soundtrack) merely "so-so." It felt like a revelation to me.

That makes sense. I sort of collect every format, but LPs are certainly my preference.

It's what Otis taught me about music that is more ambient. CD copies of Eno were his preference, because of where it was listened to.

Reading about this "California '99" record is wild. It's like the US has become some sort of hippy paradise... that still somehow has a fascist government.

I do appreciate when Sci-Fi and reality start to converge.

I didn't know what this record was when I found it many years ago in a musty shed selling off random odds and ends. The cover had no title, just the map.

I have a Jimmie Haskell record where he does James Bond themes. For some reason, I assumed it was instrumental rock music. Maybe it's weirder...?

Mr Fab:

Hey Ho, BC!

Always up for some Jimmy Haskell. He had a long and very interesting career. Making space age pop long way before synthesizers were invented. Like, this crazy early rock ‘n’ roll with bloops and bleeps. And I see his name on a lot of credits for arranging for many big names. But this is definitely a new one on me. Unless maybe you played it before? It sounds a bit familiar.

I've never played this LP before, nor have I heard it on the air before. It looks however that that Ken and Otis have played the 2nd track though a couple times in the station history.

Okay, you convinced me. I bet his James Bond covers would be plenty cool. I'll finally put on that record.
Avatar 👻 8:33pm
Mr Fab:

Like many people, it was the soundtrack to Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos” tv show that hipped me to Vangelis. So many people were writing into PBS asking what is that music?! that they finally put out a soundtrack album. Which I got for Christmas for one year.

And yes, you could get his albums very cheap. Every record store’s “electronic music“ section they were there, I grabbed a few of those $.99 beauties.

(Except for his weirdo prog band Aphrodite’s Child and their Satanic album “666.” I had to spend like REAL money for that one.

What turned me onto Vangelis was a friend in the mid-90's who played me his accordion solo in the middle of a track on his "The City" CD. He had borrowed it from the library. I had to borrow it as well.
Avatar 👻 8:40pm

My recent obsession with Vangelis came from finding his music over and over in Chinese vampire and black magic films. lol

This is Brian Eno and David Byrne, not Vangelis.

Itwas actually left off later pressings of the Eno/Byrne album, because Muslims protested the use of chanting from the Quran sampled in the music.
