A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

It’s a collection. It’s not the ownership factor, but a sort of pride in a specific collection. Some archives, such as Smithsonian folkways, are even historic as representative of entire genres. Some “collectors” take pride in the antiquity of entire eras of music. Thoughts?

Digital sound files lack potential emotive contexts -- they are just data, metadata, and a thumbnail, and therefore emotionally less valuable than a medium you can hold in your hands. At the same time, the lack of materiality in digital files heightens our sense of "ownership," as well as our desire to sample, collect, and trade music in new ways. Possessing digital files is a more intense and intimate experience than owning physical recordings, based on three things: The desire for compacting, the desire for immediacy, and the desire to customize via playlists, etc.

Re Pompidou I initially supported it - thought it would instantly put JC on ‘the map’ - but the devil is in the details as they say and the more I’ve learned about it, the more I think the plan as it currently stands is full of holes with respect to where the funding will come from and the budget is massive compared to almost every other arts institution in Jersey City and Newark. It’s not sustainable.
