A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

The capitalist class has been programming all of us, with the intention of making the general populace incapable of deep reading. Maybe, just possibly, the broad swathe of news readership is already aware of the fact that DT is insane, and that truisms that carry headlines seem crazy themselves. One of the first things journalists claimed 5 years ago was that they had no idea how to cover the guy in the media, because it was all so blatantly f****I* up from the get-go, with no cover-ups or remorse or even guile. Deep reading, yes. I was talking to somebody the other day who said they started reading Moby Dick but put it down because they couldn't take the slow pace and long discursive passages. Actually I know several people who have confessed to me that they can't read books anymore because they are used to having text broken down into small easily-digested bits. The "attention economy" has wrecked deep reading for a lot of folks.

The Presidency is not a pretty job. Whoever it is will sanction reprehensible deeds; foreign policy can’t help but be an endless flying shit-show. And things at home are hobbled in Congress. Terrible things happened on President Obama’s watch, just as they have, and will, during any incumbent’s regime. Kamala Harris will get ripped to shreds by her detractors, but at least she isn’t visibly a pathological menace to everyone. The other camp will flatly disagree, of course. Personally, I stopped using Twitter/Facebook/etc, and have dramatically reduced my time on Reddit. Instead, I read three longform news emails a day (New York Times, Morning Brew, Letters From an American). I use Bluesky and Mastodon some, but the non-algorithmic chronological feed means that I pop in and see new posts, then close the app after 90 to 240 seconds and then go on with my day. I plunked down money for a subscription to The Paris Review and read that alongside one other literary journal (currently POETRY Magazine, which I am about to swap out with Beloit Poetry Journal).

My brain is happier, my focus is more focused.

I glance at The Guardian. I subscribe to The Baffler and Jacobin and Salvage. I think I'm going to let Jacobin lapse, though. Salvage ... well, it's a nonprofit communist cooperative, but it would be nice if they published a *little* more often. And I decided to support Hellgate, a local, worker-owned NYC-focused web publication. No social media. No spyphone.

Yes, I think it's possible to reverse the damage. A few years ago I felt my attention getting fragmented, and detached from the online world (mostly). I sat down and read "Memoirs from Beyond the Tomb" by Chateaubriand (1768-1848), a few thousand pages, and got deeply into history and French literature. I also have subscriptions to the New York and London Review of Books. It's so much better that way, reading carefully edited pieces by informed people, instead of hot takes from random people.

i helped with the staging for a bill clinton appearance at brooklyn college....first thing, approaching the building, snipers were visible on roofs surrounding the college...inside there was lots curtaining. i was struck the choice of color being so studied and mediocre at the same time...it might as well had been grey... on the stage two large projection screens flanked the podium...they tested the video and two images of the starship enterprise gliding through space appeared on there screens.... all the while the staging management were trying to keep a transgendered crew member hidden from feds

You can carry a cell phone without having social media apps on it. I use mine for phone calls, SMS messaging, playing WFMU via VLC, and photography. Oh and also paying for parking since Chicago uses an app for that... that's about all I do with it. Not having the phone would just be an inconvenience, especially when I have to park the car.

As the years pass, (draw) open to establishing precedent.
Yellow wildflowers reach like yogis determined in diffusive flow.
Pain logs for temperament, not discoloring range of motion.
Standing cloud in love with breath.

Streaming standard, wave form hand.
Travelling all together in music to ascend.
Mountain page eagle blanket.
Soaring rabbit top-hat grab.
In rolling spirals thunder interpretation. Cracked into temperature blend.

From normal residues of logic stranded and threaded sand. Power (why are they like that?) turned a false corner.
As finger touches hand, lung and hair.

My neighbor found a repetitive (country) automotive photograph and jumped a bit, inside.
From swelling (look a horse in the mouth) tangles did smooth window fall.
Climbing through decades. Winding up in weird dreams.
