I do appreciate that Rogue's Gallery really sticks to the Three Act structure through it's entire run. While the acts are a little imbalanced, in terms of action and drama, there's always three acts, with two cliffhangers that keep you listening.

I remember the Big E had a carnival barker/ circus sideshow that advertised a whale name Little Irvy. I was excited to see it , entered the trailer and of course it was a disappointment. It was a taxidermied whale. Poor Little Irvy.

I embarrassed a "Smokey The Bear" costumed performer at the fair a few years ago. I'm a big Smokey fan, have been since I met him as a child, so I ran up and asked Smokey if I could get a pic. The performer nervously agreed, and it was then I realized it was a woman in the costume. I think they were nervous someone would call them out. I didn't say anything, but they seemed very nervous while I was around.

I did my usual tricks to clean up the sound on this one, and, as I have before, left in some of the tape hiss, as removing it really killed the overall robustness of the sound of the music and voices. This one didn't need as much help as other episodes, but still...

I have never had access to an expense account, but I did travel a few times for work where I would get reimbursed for my expenses. It's not quite the same, because you can't really live any larger than you usually do, but it was nice to have my expenses covered. I used to go to Cony Island every summer. They have an old roller coaster called Cyclone. I lost a pair of glasses. Another year I rode this ride that turns you upside down. That was the last ride of that type for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

The only frustration I have with shows like this, where the lead has a police officer friend, is that the officer never trusts the lead, in spite of the fact the lead is always innocent in the end. I usually hope for some SLIGHTLY better writing, so they don't fall into that trap. But at least in the Mid-Century era of radio dramas, it was a very common trope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Austin Rich:

↳ WR @9:41
I love places like that, but I don't really like the rides. Except maybe the really dull and boring ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
yerfriendpaul:

↳ WR @9:41
I had a funny experience with the Cyclone too! I was always a rule-following kid when it came to rollercoasters. Always kept my hands on the bars. Years later I was in Coney Island with my friends and I decided to try what everyone else seems to do when riding a coaster. I raised my arms up in the air. Little did I know that the cyclone would take sharp, fast turns and when it suddenly turned, the gravity forced my right arm to clobber the top of my head. Ouch! Ha ha. Lucky I didn’t knock myself out

David Shortell:

This past weekend in the county where I reside, two classic radio dramas were performed—Saturday at the Middletown Arts Center, then repeated Sunday at the Cross of Glory Church in Aberdeen (New Jersey, not Scotland). I missed both, alas.
The first play was the "All American Menace" episode of “The Thin Man” radio series (that originally starred Dick Gothard and Claudia Morgan as Nick & Nora Charles).
It was followed by a reenactment of the "Lonely Hearts" episode of “Richard Diamond, Private Detective” (that originally starred Dick Powell).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Austin Rich:

Depending on the run-time of Rocky Jordan, I don't always have time for an ad-spot in the back-half of the show. I will occasionally cut those out, in favor of the ones I make. But sometimes it helps pad out an episode that's running VERY short.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm

Avatar 9:56pm
David Shortell:

↳ Austin Rich @9:56
By the way, it makes no sense that the “The Thin Man” movie sequels and radio/TV series also had “Thin Man” in their titles. The thin man actually died early in the first story! It would’ve been better to call the sequels and series “Nick & Nora”.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm
Austin Rich:

↳ David Shortell @9:56
I was confused by that at first, too. But I guess the "Thin Man" name was so popular that it was hard to stop using. Doesn't The Pink Panther series sort of suffer from that, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
Austin Rich:

If you listen closely, you can sort of hear the vague sound of another episode of something, that was on the tape before this episode was recorded on it. (A common practice among radio archivists.)

I did hear that. Was wondering

I read the 1961-1962 Broadway play “A Shot in the Dark” (starring William Shatner, Julie Harris and Walter Matthau), itself based on the French play “L'Idiote”.
It’s almost nothing like the movie! Blake Edwards transformed it into a farcical showcase for the Clouseau character.

The sound on The Blue Beetle varies quite a bit from show to show, since it was not archived well in its day, and fans had to piece together a complete set of shows after the fact, trading with each other via the mail, etc. I used my usual tricks to clean this one up, but it certainly doesn't sound as good as some of the others.

As I mentioned in the "Dimestore Revelations" VO, this story seems very pointedly about one thing when it was written in 1953, and seems very pointedly about another thing now, in 2024.
