@ Adi From Sheffield: Wanda is a great movie! First time I saw it was in London on a crappy TV late at night, mid-eighties. I got back from seeing some lame band and it was a very rainy night. I was pissed and bored so I turn on the TV and Wanda was just starting. It took a couple of minutes, but I was riveted by about the 15 minute mark. It's a slow burn sorta deal. Seeing it the way I did the first time really made the film feel A LOT more dark and powerful, but once you watch it properly, it will make sense and leave you stunned.

WM:

Wanda (1970) directed by Barbara Loden, is one of the best American films of the 1970s. Much better in my opinion than highly touted firms by Scorcese, Altman and others. Stanley Kauffmann wrote an appreciative review in the New Republic when it first came out. I think you can find it on YouTube.

It's interesting to compare Wanda with Robert Bresson's Mouchette (1967) another film about a young woman who is neglected and exploited. There is also some similarity to Smithereens (1982) directed by Susan Seidelman (although Seidelman never did anything interesting after that).
