Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I am immersed in Melville these days, having read Moby-Dick for a second time and now venturing into other texts. Just now I read this sentence from one of his miscellaneous pieces: "The country looked underdone, its raw juices squirting all round."

Most striking about that sentence, to me, is that if you told me John Ashbery had penned it, I would have believed you.

Saw Leon Russell near the end of his days at a small club in Fort Lauderdale, Fl.. Bad experience. He seemed to be going through the motions and played exclusively on an overly loud electric keyboard. A painful experience. As my sister, brother-in-law and I exited the club, we saw Leon's support crew getting him to his van in a wheel chair. Wishing I had never seen him in this state. He was truly a great artist in his prime. Really want to read the Janovitz biography.
