Champaign, IL. It's in Eastern Central Illinois. A university town straight up in the middle of the Farm Belt. I learned the term "Sundown Town" shortly after I moved here about 15 years ago. The towns by me that were Sundown Towns are Philo, Arcola, Villa Grove, and a bunch of others. All small, traditional farm depot towns.

A musician friend suggested "Dawn of the Buffalo" as a name for the band, which was misheard as "Donna the Buffalo" and, over thirty years later, the band is still called "Donna the Buffalo". That's from Wikipedia. I also heard that

Oops! Premature posting. I meant to say that the mishearing stemmed from an announcer asking them their name in a loud music club, mistaking it, and announcing them as "Donna the Buffalo." The band members then decided they liked it better than the somewhat pretentious original name.

And it doesn't help that I'm listening at home to WMFU. I've been streaming it almost exclusively lately, because between QRM (probably sporadic E skip this time of year) and weak signal, feh. Why, since I have the computer on, and it creates its own QRM, do I torture myself by listening to 90.1?

Tim, I guess it's just not what I'm used to. Regular 2/4 or 4/4 time, like disco with a fairly obvious beat? Sung like she's happy about it?

Another naming anecdote: A story written by Ed Sanders (of The Fugs) about two beatniks in NYC in the late 1950s who want to start a cafe called "Vomit." They can't get a permit for that name, so they settle for the "Total Assault Cantina."
