A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

↳ Song: "Puzzles & Pens" by "Chris Phinney & Ed Drury"
Chris Phinney is an experimental artist that has been trading tapes since the early 80's, and is still at it, but mostly through bandcamp and cdrs, now. Chris has been undertaking a huge re-issue project, digitizing all the many, many releases he put out in the 80's and 90's, for digital consumption these days. A very unique artist!

↳ Song: "Riddles Riddling Me" by "Jandek"
Through the magic of Radio trips to SxSW, I have managed to see Jandek play live three times. For an artist that was famously reclusive from the late 70's to 2005, and never played in front of people until then, I'm astonished that it happened at all. His shows are very strange and wonderful... really unlike anything else I've seen before.

↳ Song: "Another Trip Around The Sun" by "Instagon"
Instagon moved to the desert in Arizona, and now manages a lot of cool experimental stuff down there. This boxed set was available as nine separate albums, that you could get individually. But if you bought the "boxed set," it came with an extra album, and a nice box.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Song: "Another Trip Around The Sun" by "Instagon"
Instagon is all improvised, in the moment, and takes. a number of forms. (Harsh noise, jam band, electronic noodling, performance art.) I got to play with Instagon once, though I don't think it was my strongest performance with a group. Regardless, it wound up on the only Instagon vinyl release.

Thee Headliners were a Portland rock band. Holly and JT dated, on and off again, during the time the band was together. I loved their shows, and they were a ton of fun.

As a youth, I just thought Sun Ra was a weird Jazz Guy. But as I get older, I keep hearing more stuff that he does where a musical phrase, or some rhythm pattern, will stick out, and I realize, no, he was really making something unusual and different but great, too. We had a show where it was established that Mitch likes to listen to machine noises, so they would probably do a short-show, about 15 minutes long, of different machine sounds each week.

Austin Rich:

And Mitch would probably complain each episode about how even 15 minutes is too long, because they have "stuff to do."

I recently sold a Dean Koontz novella at work, after I finished writing this. Sometimes the world rhymes with your art.

I do love a good train ride. They are very meditative.

I now have a sub-section in my record collection for LPs that have "train" sounds on them. I think I have about 8 now? I'm sure there are more, but I'm starting to find repeats when I do look at records.

The train theme after the space theme makes me think of Galaxy Express 999.

It's not great, but still kind of foundational to the whole anime genre.

My dad worked for the railroad - Southern Pacific, when that was a think - for years, until he got hurt, and then was the Union Representative, for his old gang. He worked long hours, was often gone for weeks at a time for work. I would always imagine him, riding the rails, when he was gone.

I'm a little obsessed with this band. Again.

I made a reference to my first tour. When I did my first, Mini-Mutations tour, where I had almost 20 dates across a month, I couldn't drive yet. So I took buses, trains, and the kindness of tour-mates, to complete that tour. A very long train ride, from Sacramento to Salem, was in the middle of that tour, and was very long and memorable.

Nice! I've only seen their spin-off band - White Shark Sivers, which is essentially them, but with a slightly different line-up. Those folks are all VERY good musicians.

My two other tours were in my car. I sort of learned how to drive to make touring easier. (And to take the burden off my wife, for always driving me to shows.)

This was Marla's contribution to the show tonight. She recorded the snoring sounds that you hear, when I fell asleep one night. I was happy to get that recording forwarded to me.

That does seem to be what a lot of drone artists do these days. Funny you should make that joke; my Postal Psounds audio postcard this month - which is late - is a 12 Hour ambient recording of my back patio...
