Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from July 2, 2024 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

My parents let me rent and watch horror movies when I was a kid. I was about four years old when I saw Return of The Living Dead, and saw it on VHS again, my grandma ran in front of the TV and said "This is Filth"!

I snuck into movies because I didn't have money....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Austin Rich:

I didn't go to many movies as a kid, and even as a teen, my parents always said there wasn't the money. So the times I did see movies in theaters were very memorable to me. I saw most of my cinema at home, on a small TV.

Austin (or anyone else) if you're getting into that summer mood, I'll be hosting an epic special this July 5th, from 9am - 4pm called "Groovy! Pseven Hours of Psychedelic Psummer Psounds."

In the Chicago Area, there was a theater called "Harlem Corners" that had third run films for $1.50. On Sundays my dad and I would go to the flea market and watch a movie. We didn't buy much at the flea market usually, it was just a place to browse ideas, I think.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Arvo Zylo @9:21
Agreed. It's fun stuff, occasionally, and certainly as a nice punctuation, or contrast. But when it's all that, all the time... it becomes a little boring, after a while. I prefer a more balanced line-up, with artists from a number of genres.

I was just talking about this with my boss the other day. He was talking about how, in the 80's and 90's, so many arguments about authenticity drove all the conversation about punk rock, so much so that bands would be written off for not sporting the right attitude that was "hip" at the "moment." Now, all that stuff has largely been forgotten, but the albums live on, and sound like 80's and 90's punk records.

The artist as a cultural phenomena is fascinating, as if an artist is simply a community figure going around and showing us what is possible. Fewer and fewer people get to make a living by virtue of being an artist as a lifestyle, most people are too busy working to be truly as free as an artist needs to be, I feel .
