Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from June 14, 2024 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

UM, I liked Frank Ifield's version of "The Wayward Wind," but I prefer the original Billboard chart smash by Gogi Grant in 1956. Her record knocked Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" out of a long stay at the #1 spot. I remember this all too well because my mom bought me my first record player(a Sears Silvertone) for my 12th birthday. The store threw in 6 free 45s, one of which was the Elvis classic. Singles were selling for 99 cents in those days, so I saved up my pennies and got my own copy of Ms.Grant's hit.

In my record store days, late '70s, when the first Blockheads album came out, we would wait for the store to empty and then, while the manager was in the back room, play the intro to the track that begins, "Assholes, bastards, fucking cunts and pricks!" at high volume. Pissed off the manager.

Before summer, the campus asked us to contribute book reviews for a post designed to invite incoming fall '24 undergrads to read up on "Defining Moments." I reviewed Brendan Mullen's photo chronicle of The Masque, in which you'll find photos of The Alley Cats and yours truly. My staff here at the law school saw the review, and promptly borrowed the book to examine the details. A lot of fun between those covers.

Do you have a note?

Really, my memory may be toying with me. That could very well have been the single track. I just remember it differently.

Sorry to say I saw Dexy's Midnight Runners in the wake of the frenzy over "Come On, Eileen." They only had the one album to work with, just like when I saw Julian Lennon. Encores at both concerts ncluded tunes the artists had already performed. Big bummer!

"Automobile" is a funny word. In high school my buddies and I decided that "There goes my automobile" is a sentence one will never hear in ordinary conversation. (Also, "Look at his skin.")

Shades of a few Stevie tracks in the Burgess. What was the similar sounding item in your imind?
