That’s true, no getting around that. But fortunately bc of that lawsuit, in 1991, artists were compensated. Can you imagine if 33 years later there was nothing? Whole lotta $$$ ended up going to the artists. Not great but better than the other option.

I learned a new take on one of the more (in)famous sampling lawsuits recently. In the recent Biz Markie doc, Prince Paul said they actually reached out to Gilbert O'Sullivan to license Alone Again. O'Sullivan agreed for a $10,000 one time fee. Biz said that was too much and went ahead with the sample anyway.

Prince Paul deserves his own documentary. His sense of music and how/what to sample is nearly unparalleled. Up there with Dilla. And he was involved in so many monumental hip hop projects & moments. I’d watch it!

The Lorraine Motel is on my list for this year too.

The Lorraine Motel has Stax history too. Many of the Stax artists and songwriters would hang out there. There was a lounge and a pool. It was an oasis for many Blacks in Memphis. Many songs were written there too.

Yes, Mom! That's his LA fun band! He and a guy named Nathan do duets like Sam and Dave! It's awesome! They have organ and horns, too! They played Round Up here two years ago and some stayed at my house, my friend's Airbnb and the Go-Go girls stayed at Joe from Ugly Beats house. There's like 8 people on stage. Super fun to dance to, too!
