When we listened to "Candy Matson," she did a variation on this story, set on a dude ranch, as her "New Years" installment. This one takes some different turns here and there, but it's got a lot of the same tropes working for it.

We don't have all the episodes of this show that were aired, so it is hard to know if there was more continuity if you heard them all. But sometimes Rogue has a girlfriend. Sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes he woos someone during the episode, and sometimes he's trying to get back to a date he's already set up. If there are more scripts for this show floating around somewhere, I'd love to read them! But for now, I don't really know if there's anymore continuity to his dating life than "he likes girls."

I'm fairly certain that Mills is being played by Gerald Mohr, who popularized the role of Phillip Marlowe on the radio, but was also a very hard working character actor who appeared in hundreds of radio shows.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Austin Rich:

While he's always charming, I've noticed that Dick Powell blows lines occasionally, though only in small ways. We've heard a lot of other stars flub occasional lines, even in a syndicated, transcription disc show. I think, given how quickly these shows were cranked out, they just didn't go back to fix problems like that, unless it was REALLY bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm

I've heard them three times already and was getting ready for a fourth! hahaha! Thanks for playing Rogue's Gallery! I haven't got around to those yet...

I love Dick Powell on the radio. Hopefully I can track down more of his radio appearances, as I'd like to run them after this, before I run his other radio detective (who sings), Richard Diamond!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

"See you next week!" Rogue also talks to, and interacts with, the announcer and the ad readers, so he might be the character that breaks the 4th Wall the most, in all our shows.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

I can only imagine what it was like to actually do these shows live, and what the stations / studios were like in those days. I know some movies have tried to recreate that, but I have a feeling it's only a fraction of the story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Maulydaft:

Richard Diamond is also great! I've listened to all of them a few times. They even bring that weird ass cloud 9 character into one or two - I was pretty confused when I first heard it, then I heard a Rogue and clued in to the joke!

Rogue's Gallery actually has a pretty high body count, and can get pretty grim. For a show that has a comedy "imp" character, and is fairly upbeat otherwise, I'm often shocked by the violence.

"You know what I mean?" is usually how Rogue ends the show, but it often follows something a little disparaging about the date that didn't go right. It is the one part of this show that is a little hard to take.

As I understand it: the currently floating around set of shows is incomplete, and as we have heard, not all of them sound very good. There was a theory that the "more episodes" was only a rumor, but this Kickstarter says they have discs for all of them, and will be issuing them someday.

I think I'm going to have Obadiah Baird back on the show someday, who has been on before, as an expert in the Golden Age of Sci-Fi. We spoke at length about Dimension X, and the authors that wrote for that show. He has suggested that the difference between the era that Dimension X was made, and the era that X Minus One was made, is fairly huge, in the world of Science Fiction. (1950 for the first, and 1955 for the later.) So I might pick his brain about the world of Sci-Fi in 1955, to help set the stage for X-Minus One.

The "friendly helpful scientist who helps a superhero" trope wasn't new in 1940, but it wasn't that old, either. But in previous generations, a helpful "mystic" or "Shamen" would usually advise a character that would be that era's superhero analog.

The populist aspect of superhero stories from this era is sort of inspiring.

"Our community isn't getting the help from cops or the government that we were promised. I better put on some armor and a costume and help out those who are being screwed."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

In reality, the kind of person who thinks he can get to the bottom of any crime ring on his own without oversight, and then "beat up the right people" to stop it, sounds like a terrifying addition to any community.

L. Sprague de Camp was a writer who wrote in many genres, but I think some of his best stories are alternate histories, or sci-fi yarns. He was the man who coined the term, "Extra Terrestrial," and was even the first to shorten it to E.T.

This aggressive hunter character who demands to know how time machines work seems a little false to me. In my experience, he wouldn't care how it works, but would be more angry that he can't go back to last week and shoot a lion.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Austin Rich:

Full disclosure: my grandfather did many things to make money, and taxidermy was one of them. He would mount the heads of game that people shot, and charge for it. There were always animal skins and horns on the wall and whatnot. He gifted us a bearskin rug that he made, that I recall sleeping on as a child. Its sort of horrible now, but he was very good at it. I wish I had one of his pieces, now.

Trophy hunting is very distasteful to me but I am finding it interesting as to how they are playing out the characters in this.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm

My Dad, and my grandfather, would hunt and fish almost every year, and while there was a lot of taxidermy, it was also for sustenance. I would never hunt now, and even fishing seems a little beyond my interest. But I miss the venison and fresh fish we would have as a result.

Still: I'm against hunting, and trophy hunting in particular, these days. Can't change the past, but I can make better choices, now.
