There's a rumor that Courtney the Codger will return to WFMU tonight at 7pm. I wouldn't post this here if the rumor were not true. But if it were true, it wouldn't be a rumor.

↳ Song: "The Blessing" by "Ornette Coleman"
I had a wildly vivid dream about Ornette Coleman in 2010 or 2011. I was playing banjo, and he was playing trumpet.

I still remember it as clearly as if it really happened.

I was playing a slow and pretty song, and he snuck up behind me and just started playing all kinds of atonal noise. I tried to adjust what I was playing to accommodate it, but was seated and couldn't turn around to see who it was. Until after we both stopped, I turned around to see him grinning like a maniac.

"And you were trying to play along!" he cackled.

I've been collecting music for, ahem, more than 50 years now. I still think vinyl sounds better than other formats out there (assuming it was a well recorded and mastered record to begin with). and still lean to geting LPs over digital versions (Bandcamp is the BEST-you get a digital download of any album you buy there, in any format. Of course, they don't have everything...

If CDs are going to be "revived", I would hope they would make them in an improved format, more durable, less prone to skipping and scratching and rotting. If they are to be collected, they should be less "disposable" to make it worth the effort.

Frank Talk About Humans:

As a lifelong music buyer, my motto has always been to go after whatever’s cheap and available. Vinyl has become so fetishized since Record Store Day, that it isn’t really that cheap anymore. So CDs make sense more than they did in the 90s. It’s a really good format for a lot of reasons. Namely, it’s a physical copy of something that can be easily loaded into your iTunes. A physical backup, even. They’re smaller and easier to tour with, especially internationally. Also cheaper and faster to produce, which is an asset to most artists. Just a few reasons why it’s simply a more practical format. Luckily, most things stream now, but if you’re an audiophile, CDs are fine. Also, luckily, CDs are cheap right now, and a great way to support WFMU, so it’s a win-win. Anyone arguing for vinyl is obviously very financially invested, and that’s fine. When that becomes cheap again, I’ll probably buy more of it again too, but I’m 2024 it just seems like a material hang up for the first world

Two record stores in my neighborhood have boxes of $1 and $2 LPs. Often they're too beat-up to purchase, but I manage to find plenty in good shape. Just picked up an old Lindisfarne LP with a cool die-cut cover a few days ago for two bucks.

Had to build a studio in the backyard to house the records, CDs and LPs both. That adds a substantial premium to each unit, which means I need to buy still more to reduce the marginal cost. See how this works?

I am still buying CDs for all of the reasons you mention, Frank. I thought about switching back to vinyl. My wife, oddly, even encouraged me to do it. I started buying used CDs again a couple years ago, until recently one of them tripped up my cars CD player and it thinks there's a CD in there. :(

Not just that, but it's usually surprisingly friendly, flame-war-free, and troll-free around here (today's accusations notwithstanding). Most decent comments on the internet, or close to it.

Melody Maker "newspaper" from England back int the 80's had flexi disks. I had a zodiac mindwarp one for a while.

Fan made Fall doc, "zits not repetition, it's discipline" https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6SoICqXUgMM

S Hanley's "The Big Midweek" is probably more 'informstive' than MES's ghost written auto bio.

The Hanley brothers "Oh brother" podcast is pretty good (despite crap sound quality), the Grant Showbiz, Marcia Schofoeld & Una Baines ones are my faves from the band members . The Rollins & Albini ones are entertaining.

But for info on the songs & with bits & pieces on how they (possibly) came to be then it's "The Annotated Fall" website I reckon.

I've not read Wolstenholme, nor Brix's nor Paul Hanley's books tho. Paul's book on the making of Hex Enduction Hour is rated tho, so maybe start there plus the BBC doc & the Annotated website?

Lastly there's the hefty"You must get them all" book which is probably the definitive guide & I think 'does' every song in order (the now largely gutted blog that it's based off did iirr)

Hope that helps, daresay IC/everyone knows of most of this already, but Justin Case is a friend to us all, innit!

Irwin, in sports news, I took a screaming line drive off the side of my neck while pitching batting practice(!) at our first softball game of the season last night. Two inches to the right, and I think I might not have survived. Sore and swollen today but glad to be hearing music!

This album transports me to a very specific time and place in my life... ca. 2011 / 2011, I was between jobs with only a Saturday bartending gig on the LES (St Jerome's) ... lots of hangovers, stress, and a kind of broken clarity — or at least a broken translucence.

character assessments based on an opinion you're arguing (and started) against is trolling.
everyone is trying to have a reasonable debate/discussion and you're making incorrect assumptions based on your obviously limited experience.

...many people have invested a lot of money on many, even ALL formats. i personally am selling most of my vinyl... NOT holding onto it.
it has nothing to do with an experience opinion about the sound.
