The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

This is my third. Except I totally didn't feel anything today. Then again, I'm used to the house shaking. Except I wasn't home. I might have been in the car. Or walking across the street. Or sitting at a cafe in a brick building. Other people felt it in my town, but not lil' ol' Wendo.

Good Evening Rich & Radio Wreckers!

Holy Moley! Our house is roughly at least 15 miles from the epicenters of the 2 quakes that hit East Coast today. I was here in the basement when the first one hit @10:23 AM, so you could imagine how intense it must've been for me. My bro felt the aftershock from his room upstairs just before 6:00 PM. It's worth mentioning the epicenters were about 5 miles from, err, you-know-who's country club in Lamington.

Two tidbits about Greasy Truckers:
1. Independent, Oct. 14, 2007 -- "The chief protagonists at this hippie grungefest at the Roundhouse were Nick Lowe's pub-rockers, Brinsley Schwarz; Man, aka the Welsh Grateful Dead; and Hawkwind, who in 1972 were in their barely constructed pomp. Greasy Truckers itself was an organisation loosely inspired by San Fran's anarcho-imps The Diggers. Everyone had a confused, rather slow-moving ball but a ball nevertheless. What was once a double LP is now three CDs. Hawkwind deliver themselves of the baby that became 'Silver Machine', Man emit a 22-minute 'Spunk Rock' and the Brinsleys - well, they're breezy."
2. Nick Kent, NME, 1972 -- "FIRST THE facts: Greasy Truckers are basically two people who wish to be known as Melvin and Fanny Hotrock..."

The second earthquake I was in...
I was in NYC, Bedpan Alley (First Avenue, lower UWS) at a medical appointment with Glenn. We were at a subterranean level. I was in the waiting room, reading a magazine. I felt the subway rumbling beneath us, a common experience in NYC. A few minutes later, the nurses were freaking out. "OMG we just had an earthquake!" Then I realized, "Heyyyy, there's no First Avenue subway!" So, that's me.

The first earthquake I remember: it woke me up one springtime morning. I was having one of those almost-awake dreams: my bed was attached to the floor by hinges, and it was shifting to and fro. I woke up, realized what was happening, threw on clothes and ran outside... where the sun was shining and the birds were chirping. That was Brattleboro, VT, 2002 or so.

Living my entire life in California, I've been in countless earthquakes. Among the memorable ones, I was working in downtown LA on the 42nd floor. When I felt the rumbling, I ran to the windows to see if I could notice other buildings swaying.

Another time I was driving one early morning to work or UCLA. At first I thought I'd hit something or gotten a flat tire, then I saw the store windows on Whittier Blvd. rippling.

So... when I was 12 or 13 years old, I was a lonely suburban-NJ kid, spinning the radio dial, trying to find something interesting. I came upon a station at 91.1FM, and they were playing Zappa's "Billy the Mountain." It was WFMU, of course. I was stunned and delighted to know that not only were people making this music, but someone was letting someone else play it on the radio. It made my heart happy.
This set is bringing me back to that feeling. Thanks, Rich!

okay. 1977, i'd explored and found weirdness at 91.1. every now & then i'd visit, when the big commercial stations were unbearable. (i was a teenager and quite liked punk rock and reggae...)
then, winter 1980, after the short-lived amazingly good wpix-fm turned to shit ("love songs...nothing, but love songs") and wnew-fm became absolutely worthless; i visited 91.1 and it was playing "music of the morning of the world" (balanese gamelan) and i left my dial there... indefinitely!

I was going to mention this to Don-O, but my favorite SCTV sketch with Flaherty in it was "Quincy: Cartoon Coroner". Hilarious how he hammed it up with his uncanny Klugman impression!

One of the obits mentioned he was originally from Pittsburgh, which I didn't know before. His SCTV cohort John Candy was from nearby Beaver Falls.

Uncle Floyd was a wonderful wreck of a show. Kinda like Pee Wee's Playhouse in that it was parodying kiddie shows, but also being totally for adults. Basically, sketch comedy. They had live bands on every week, too. The Ramones were on it, among others. In-between sketches, Floyd would play an upright piano and sing old jazz and blues numbers. Really wonderful. No budget, and it showed.
