The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

One exception in my opinion is when the DJ complains about his own music. Case in point Irwin hates Van Morrison (maybe it's a put on but seemed pretty genuine to me) and played the entire Astral Weeks and kept talking over it and how it sucks. And all the commenters followed suit making dumb jokes confusing Van with Jim and such. Maybe it was an exercise in groupthink but that was a bit of a head scratcher for me.

Groupthink is something that I'm particularly attuned to. Just last week there was a discussion on a particular ongoing news event. I tuned in late and didn't hear what was said on the air but the comments all used a particular loaded adjective and I pointed that out and let's just say it wasn't well received by the host or some of the commenters.

I'm not a WFMU DJ :( but my approach is kind of the opposite. Even when I was in a radio studio and worked with more physical media, I planned things out pretty much. Exactly! I do pull a stack of CDs and records and I have a big selection of digital files in my Traktor playlist... but yes, with those I do my show spontaneously.

I started out playing a lot more dance music, so I was extra concerned about avoiding shoes-in-the-dryer beat clashes. I play a lot more beatless stuff now so it's less of an issue. I still practice some of my transitions though

There's not that much on 'FMU lately. Jesse Dorris sometimes, if you're up late/early. Jack Mello fill-ins are great.

I was gonna say, instead of asshole, "dick pics," but only folks on dating apps who try to date other men would understand that reference, and I didn't want to make any assumptions. So, I went with "assholes."

Saw a reference the other day to the only whaling ship on which Melville actually sailed and worked: The Acushnet. And I thought I should remember that and be Captain Smuggo someday in recalling it at just the right moment as an impressive bit of high-grade Jeopardy-ish trivia. Ready....ready....

I wonder if there ever been a butcher shop called Respectable Meats with the jingle "don't you realize, we've got respectable meats"?
