Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Whatever this song is, someone locally put it on her answering machine. Strangers like me were hearing her sing about the lovelight in my eyes. That's none of her damn business!

They did some wonderfully peculiar treated piano stuff that's rather startling in contrast to the stuff they did much later.

The eligibility rules for Oscar music awards have kept many of the best soundtracks from being nominated, even though the large majority of music was composed for the film.

The story about oscar rules being changed so only songs written explicitly for movies to be qualified for awards. I recall there being some discussion regarding Ryuichi Sakamoto's soundtrack contributions for Revenant.

Treemonisha is a really interesting work. It has a female hero(ine), and the men decide to defer to her, because she is educated. It also takes place within a wholly African-American community. Joplin essentially went broke trying to get it put on in a real production, which never happened. 80 years later, the world said, "Oops!"
