As another Deadhead (at least I was back in the day, still love to listen to it), I don't see why the Airplane shoud be automatic. I like a lot of their stuff, but they lack the, what's the word, maybe subtlety, indirect references, of the Dead.

It's interesting ...cause over the decades, people have kind of thot - if you think the Dead are meandering bullsh*t - the Airplane @ least are a real Band with Songs & even a couple Hits - what have you... There's that interview Jerry notably says he doesn't perceive a real commonality in the SF Bands - which is - yerknow ...Yes - & - No. There's even a particular kind of really fast sweating out acid Gittar Vibrato I associate with Psychedelic SF - if you know what I mean...

The Dead did have a couple of "hits", but these generally weren't like what the live show sounded like. You either liked it or hated it. .

- the great irony of the Dead slowly becoming a huge money-making Institution & Garcia hating the responsibility & routine. My ex-gf ended up in the same rehab Garcia went to, had a heart attack in & died.

They still have quite an active merchandising department-I'm conastantly getting emails about the latest Live Concert Dead concert release (Dave Picks, #10233928), and other Dead stuff. Quite a machine...
