Favoriting July 24, 2023: A little fingerstyle love, with Guitarist Hayden Pedigo.

Hayden Pedigo - WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio 2023-07-18

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

On his sixth album, "The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored," Guitarist Hayden Pedigo offers up a sweet serving of melodic fingerstyle guitar. This Amarillo, Texas native warmly incorporates influences from the likes of Leo Kottke, John Fahey and many Brit-folk guitarists, but shows his own cinematic style in his tunes. Hayden has been touring partly with Jenny Lewis, and partly solo, and found a little time to chat with Irene and play a couple of his tunes.

Back in High School, I was the family music nerd (shocking, I know). My younger sister didn't have much interest, but she loved Nick Drake (I have no idea how she discovered him),and had a few of his albums. Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm

I'm glad I knew about Nick Drake fairly early on. And tehn Scott Appel, who was one of the first to figure out Nick's tunings and chords. He contacted the Drake family before there =was an internet to speak of and they sent him some unfinished demos, which he included on this album.

To be honest Irene, it's probably better looking back than it felt at the time. To quote Squeeze, at that point his drinking had became a proper stinking, and he was a bit all over the place. Also, to be frank, no one in the audience really cared. Everyone was into beats and decks and mixing, and folk was lying around on the pavement (sidewalk) with a 'Free to anyone who's interested' sign around its neck. I'm just super glad that he (and many others) lived long enough to see the wheel turn again and play once more to packed and adoring audiences.
