Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from April 21, 2023 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

UNCLE MICHAEL, always great to hear some Dolphy. If an old friend of mine, James Newton, 24-time "Best Flute" in Down Beat Magazine's International Critics' Poll, is listening, I'm sure he would be smiling to hear Eric. I had one like that back in college-was driving with friends to Florida (in a car of one of my buddy's family). It was winter vacation-we caught an ice slick about half way there, spun 180 degrees (facing oncoming truck traffic; I was in the "death seat" next to the driver), then another 90 degrees, while also sliding towards the shoulder of the highway. The car was impaled on a post at the edge of the highway (which was lucky, as I believe it wasn't safe to keep going). We were all fine; the car didn't do so well...Shook me up a bit...

@doctorjazz. James is one serious musician! I can recall attending a concert by pianist Cecil Taylor at UCLA. I had never seen a listener concentrating so hard on the players onstage. That night Cecil had Andrew Cyrille on drums, James Ware on tenor sax and Raphe Malik on trumpet. No bassist, as I recall. We got to meet the band in the dressing room afterwards. James made a point to compliment each musician on his performance. He was especially impressed by Mr. Ware(tenor was James's first instrument). This was the mid-70s.

These sorts of occasions are life lessons, @doctorjazz. I learned that except for my post-collision fury with the truck driver, I was fairly settled during all of it. OED on "groty":

Etymology: In early use groaty , representing phonetic respelling of grot- (in grotesque adj.) + -y suffix1. The shift of t to d is accounted for by the phonetic equivalence of intervocalic t and d in U.S. English. Compare grotty adj.(Show Less)
U.S. slang.

Disgusting, revolting, ‘gross’; dirty, unhygienic, squalid; unattractive, slovenly, sloppy. Frequently in grody to the max, unspeakably awful, ‘the pits’.

"Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian)" is a song written by John D. Loudermilk.[1] It was first recorded by Marvin Rainwater in 1959 and released on MGM as "The Pale Faced Indian", but that release went unnoticed. The first hit version was a 1968 recording by Don Fardon – a former member of the Sorrows – that reached number 20 on the Hot 100 in 1968[2] and number 3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1970.[3]
