Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
Jeff Golick:

For “Sizzles” the composer writes: “Drums of various sizes are randomly placed throughout the performance space. Fine materials such as lentils, chickpeas, and candy hearts are sprinkled on the drumheads. As low organ tones are sounded, the skins of the drums vibrate sympathetically, causing the drums to sound and the material to move. Each drum is individually amplified with a contact or air microphone and a separate amplifier.”

Alvin Lucier made the final choices of the versions of “Sizzles” featured on this release.

You reminded me of something I'd forgotten, that I have here, a photocopy of handwritten music manuscript written for the Japanese pianist/composer Aki Takahashi, an arrangement of the Beatles' 'Because', arranged Akira Nishimura. It was in my piano teacher's slush pile, so to speak. someone proposed she look at it, as she was/is a performer of 20th century music, and she let me have it because I was interested. I should try to work on it...should being the operative word...all of that was a long time ago

We watched White Noise on Friday night and, on the whole, enjoyed it. (I did read the book, many years ago.) It struck me as a French movie, kind of Baumbach's version of Godard's "Weekend." Watching the delicious ending, though, I couldn't help but wish he'd begun there, and gone full "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" instead.

I got shut out of one show in the Manhattan Marathon, Craig Taborn at The Jazz Gallery, stood outside for a while, then headed downtown to see Linda May Han Oh. I did get to see Immanuel Wilkins, Donny McCaslin, and Joel Ross' Parables (which reminded me much of Abdullah Ibrahim's music). Thursday night was a blur, horns, pianists, bassists, drummers switching constantly over about 5 hours, didn't catch many of the names in the announcements, but Michele Rosewoman, Terri Lynn Carringtho, Kris Davis, Mary Halvorson, Allison Miller were among the (mostly female) performers.

Yeah, White Noise is one of a VERY few books I've read twice. Might be worth reading beforehand, as the tone of the movie really tried hard to match DeLillo's sort of hyper-real affect.

Also some Coen brothers vibes in there, too, I thought. I'm guessing some of the people who seem to have REALLY hated the White Noise movie either weren't familiar with the book, or were overly enamored of DeLillo's version. Just a guess, tho.
