I agree philosophically. I’m interested in the business side of it too. Presumably he takes home a bigger cut (so price should be less). But his upfront costs are higher (so price should be more). Maybe it’s a wash.
There’s also the psychology of consumerism: make it too affordable and people don’t think it’s special.
Damon K (dadadrummer) recently “reposted” his essay suggesting that you can’t know the value of music based on the way downloads are priced (since there’s no physical product). An economic/philosophic argument (which I am oversimplifying).

Frankly, I don't know how most people can even afford to live these days, let alone creative workers. Artists should ask for what they feel is right. On more than one occasion I've been asked to produce artwork for people who then offered me the most paltry ridiculous sum, while voicing the rationale that I should be happy with it, and stupidly eager, 'because I like doing what I'm doing'. What might take me several days of labour to produce, is apparently worth what they make in an hour, and when I ask them why the preposterous disparity, they appeared dumbfounded and deeply insulted. Meanwhile, a unit or two of my dentist's time means many hours arduous work for me. I had to pay for university too. I had to put in the ten thousand hours too. WTF? If musicians ask more for their output than an arbitrary 'going rate, pay them.

@DJPeterDE I’d say you’re hitting on all the right points. I don’t know that DK essay but sounds worth looking for. It’s tough as if you don’t have a good system to listen to music on $20 is big. If like me your CD player is just a means to ripping high quality files and saving them to a drive hooked up to your system, then $15 plus shipping for a CD vs. $20 for an immediate DL is a wash. End result is the same. High quality files that sound good. I do miss a bit the physical component, reading liners while I listen etc. but that’s fine. JM could easily be with a label that would fund, 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️, so I’m all down to support his independence and DIY move. Plus he organized a Threadgill retrospective years ago so… forever appreciative and wanting to pay it back!!!

Ross's own concerts have a free-flowing aspect, in which one piece runs into the next. It's a bit unsettling, but in a good way.

Planning to hear George at the Clark Institute in Williamstown, MA in a couple of weeks. Short but very cheap concert ($5). New John Hollenbech group, with Aurora Nealand & Anna Webber. Anyone in the area should check it out. Maybe museum admission is extra.

Haven't thought about where to go yet, lots of good stuff.
The Brooklyn venues now combine the difficulties of parking in Manhattan with a longer drive time from Joisey.
Gotta run, thanks Jeff!
