Someone like Dan Holiday is familiar with all the usual alcohols and drugs. Occupational hazard. (Though, as we've heard established in previous episodes: Dan usually turns down alcohol, and chooses other things... but I suspect that's just him being a little straight while he's on the case.

I haven't decided 100% what will follow Box 13, but I do have a few ideas. There aren't many episodes, but "Candy Matson" is one of the few female detective shows that was popular in the Old Time Radio era, and has been largely forgotten in the modern era. I would probably only take a few months to air all the existing episodes, and it might be nice to run something short in comparison to the year-plus it has taken to run Box 13.
Avatar 9:22pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Sounds like a winding siren
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Austin Rich:

"Mayfair Productions" also made The Damon Runyun Theater, a sort of comedy / gangster / noir type show. For consistency's sake, might be fun to have another Mayfair show, too.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Austin Rich:

If we are looking for a show that is sort of like Box 13, with a star in the lead, "Rocky Fortune" stars Frank Sinatra, and is about a tough guy who drifts from odd job to odd job, and in the process, ends up in an adventure with each new job he takes. (Often in the noir vein.) That one seems like a good follow-up as well.

I'm a sucker for a lot of old pop standards and music like this. My parents were so into Rock & Roll, that anything from before that seemed so cool and interesting.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Austin Rich:

Finally, we are going to hear a VERY long run of Bold Venture episodes, for most of 2023, really. So it's probably a good thing that we've been power-loading all those documentaries about Bogart and Bacall...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Austin Rich:

At this point in Bogart's career, he could mostly decide if he wanted to work or not, and could pick his projects on his own. Clearly, he had an affection for "Bold Venture"; the production company that he owned produced the show, they wrote the character of Shannon for Bogart and the character of Sailor for Bacall, and the premise of the show seems to combine a few of the roles that he made popular on screen, capitalizing on his already massive star power. My theory is that, since he got to spend a lot of time with Lauren both while recording and when they were off work, and he could drink a fair amount and still record radio, making "Bold Venture" was an easy choice to make.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Austin Rich:

According to a number of sources, recording "Bold Venture" earned Bogart $5,000 a week in 1951. That's $57,252.12 a week, in 2022 dollars, another reason to want to work in radio.

While it does seem hard to follow Chandu, you should keep in mind that really, not much has happened. They are still in Cairo, they are still fighting against Roxor, and we still haven't found Dot's / Dorthory's husband, Robert, who has been missing for a while, and they all suspect he is in Cairo.

And that's really all you need to know about most episodes of Chandu.

This "kid" is unusually articulate, and manages to to add a little nuance to his performance, that I'm fairly certain that whoever is doing the kid's voice is actually an adult. Which is very common, both in radio and animation these days.

I was only a small baby when it happened but there was a lot of concern I learned about later that Rochester would also fall under Canadian control. Buffalo was successful in beating back Canada but the invasion is why they all say "eh" now in Buffalo. A lot of the Canadians married Buffalo War Brides so the influence lingers still.
