Andres:

Hi, Nick. There’s a rumour that Thurston Moore is dropping by your show today. ;)
Avatar 7:03pm
djnogoodnick:

I guess that would be alright. Does he smoke?
  7:04pm
holland oatzier holland:

He smokes posers!
  7:04pm
Andres:

Oh, he’s hot alright.

Avatar 7:19pm
djnogoodnick:

Hey there! I thought about repeating last week's show since whatever glitch happened in the system cut off the recording? But instead went on a different tangent before the holiday sound starts happening next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
doctorjazz:

Holiday sounds, ughh...(just call me Dr Grinch)
Avatar 7:26pm
djnogoodnick:

No no! Don't misunderstand me. I don't play holiday standards.
Avatar 7:27pm
djnogoodnick:

Just kinda twinkly, xmas-y piano jazz and vocal tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
doctorjazz:

Tuba?
Avatar 7:30pm
djnogoodnick:

Yes brass is christmas-y
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
doctorjazz:

(I meant the solo on the Zappa sounded like a tuba, but quite a player, some chops! Maybe a low trombone..?
Avatar 7:38pm
djnogoodnick:

Oh yeah, he would write a piece for one, and hire the best tuba-ist in L.A.
  7:43pm
Andres:

Just checked. A search for “Christmas tuba music” yields plenty of satisfactory results.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
doctorjazz:

There you go, I vote for Andres suggestion!
Avatar 7:45pm
djnogoodnick:

Is there a better season for a tuba?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
doctorjazz:

Modal, So What type tune this Thomas (as are many others since Miles' masterpiece)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
doctorjazz:

And TRane, with a twist.
(and there is no bad season for tuba, imo)!
  7:47pm
Andres:

All seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm are good for tuba.
Avatar 7:47pm
djnogoodnick:

Yes! Trane and Miles are kind of the reason for the season. But I'm still kind of in jazz rock mode (late fall)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
zzz:

yes docjazz, with you on the so what vibe of last tune, and cool naima take right there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
doctorjazz:

I didn't know there was a jazz-rock season.
(I'm behind on all this stuff).
Avatar 7:52pm
djnogoodnick:

You're not behind on anything! It's just what we do here.
  8:02pm
Andres:

Gotta leave early. A great expression of the musical spirit of late fall in tonight’s show. Thanks, Nick!

(haven't see/heard anything with Mark-Almond in maybe 40-50 years...)
Avatar 8:40pm

I always appreciate hearing that! I'm actually a little out of it and forgot to turn the channel back up just now.
Avatar 8:42pm
djnogoodnick:

They have some really nice soft rock / crossover jazz tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm

breckers, billy cobham, john abercrombie on that dreams, nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm

gotta run to wrap up the Sunday night activities. had a great time as always, thanks Nick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
doctorjazz:

More Zappa-whenever I hear Zappa on FMU, especially instrumental Zappa, I think I should listen to his stuff more (think I have some on digital files). His shtick always turned me off.
(there have been some quick drop outs ,fyi)

Great set this evening 👍🏻

hey DJNN! Hey folx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm

And whenever I hear Badbadnot good on FMU, I think I should listen to them more...(so much great music, so little time...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
doctorjazz:

Hello Mxter Baba!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
zzz:

docjazz, that was i guess an alternate take of inca roads. the album
it was originally released on, one size fits all, definitely worth checking out if you like fusion jams, guitar shredding, complex compositions, and riffs. relatively minimal on zappa shtick.
i run very hot and cold on zappa,
Avatar 8:49pm
djnogoodnick:

I think BBNG have done a lot to spark renewed interest in jazz this past decade. Hey Mxter Baba!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
zzz:

this is a nice group of collaborators on this badbadnotgood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

I was startled to hear Inca Roads drifting in from the kitchen. I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard Frank Zappa on WFMU. He really rubs a lot of people the wrong way - still!
Avatar 8:50pm
djnogoodnick:

The thing is, I prefer Zappa's zigzaggy early compositions to his really jammy later stuff (although his cast of musicians were all incredible)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

In between 1972 and 1975 I saw Frank Zappa countless times - then never again. It was his best period. The bands were unbelievable.
Avatar 8:55pm
djnogoodnick:

Yes, that would have been amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
doctorjazz:

Was always turned off by the shtick (doody, and all that stuff he found funny). But as a composer, guitar player, he was really quite fine!
(just like badbadnotgood as a name, as well as the music).
Thanks, Mr DJ, great hanging tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

It was easy, Nick. I live in L.A. which was home base for Frank Zappa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
zzz:

franco, just checked on 72-75 releases: waka/jawaka, grand wazoo, overnite sensation, roxy and elsewhere, one size fits all, bingo fury (and i kind of love
zoom allures from ‘76). hard ti argue with that run
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
Franco Twinkie:

I went to the premier of all those bands.
  Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
WR:

Thank you! Nick!

Franco, I'll get that Zappa boot to you in January.

Onward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm

KimSorise:

I love FZ - always have. My Dad gifted me his copy of We're Only in it for the Money when I was 11. I was not ready or even understood it, but I tried. I loved Apostrophe and Freak Out in my late teens. Then I heard I fell head over heels for Bongo Fury (more of a lost Beefheart record imo) and One size fits all - which still to this day is a favorite. I can do without some of the goofiness but you cannot deny the player or the composer. FZ fan for life.
