This Carlton predates Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow by two years, and almost seems an influence on the latter's "Freeway Jam."

wendy del formaggio:

Hi Nick. I’m embarrassed to say this is my first time listening to your show. What is my excuse? I have no idea. Anyway, it’s great. Glad I can tune in tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
Asheville Jon:

is it just me, or is the stream a bit glitchy?
Avatar 5:50pm
djnogoodnick:

Me too! And welcome. No shame in not catching every one of FMU's fabulous DJs which is why I love covering others' time slots from time to time to catch a new audience.

I lost audio and had to stop / start to get it back.

Tricky technology! I am not listening back to the stream (easier just to listen to the incoming) but I don't see any interruptions in the software.

Avatar 6:38pm

The Scaries can be escaped by forgetting that Sunday is the day before Monday. I've done it!
  6:39pm
wendy del formaggio:

Nick, when did you start doing a show here on the Drummer stream?
Avatar 6:40pm
djnogoodnick:

Just over a year ago Wendy of the cheese! My first year was on the Rock n Soul stream, then I moved to a two-hour time slot here last August.
  6:46pm
wendy del formaggio:

Very nice! I’m really loving tonight’s show. Sundays on the Drummer stream are kickass.
Avatar 6:47pm
djnogoodnick:

Thanks! I agree and feel lucky to be part of such a great lineup.
  6:50pm
wendy del formaggio:

Hooray!
Avatar 6:53pm
djnogoodnick:

My show is usually 2 hours and not so Rock-y. Took some liberties with it for the double-length slot this week.
  6:54pm
wendy del formaggio:

I think it might be okay to reveal that come January I’ll likely be joining you. I’m moving my show from community radio to the Drummer stream. I’m still getting everything set up with the sage advice of Irene and Doug. And Sweetwater! I’ll be on Mondays right before Kim Sorise.
  6:55pm
wendy del formaggio:

I’ll have a gander at your archives.
Avatar 6:55pm

That's fantastic! Congrats and I look forward to hearing!

djnogoodnick:

Where are you based out of, may I ask?
  6:59pm
wendy del formaggio:

Thanks! I’m psyched!
I live in Bellows Falls, VT. I have been involved in radio forever. Long-time FMU volunteer (I’m originally from NJ). In 1998 I helped start a pirate station in Brattleboro (VT). Etc.
  7:01pm
wendy del formaggio:

Kindred spirits! I also use tracks off this Don Harper album as bed music. “Euphophoria” (my fave!) and “Misty Mood.”
Avatar 7:03pm
djnogoodnick:

Oh cool! I'm a big fan of using all this cool found library music as intended. Some of it ends up being my most-played tracks I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm

always nice to hear some Brian Auger / Oblivion Express, thanks for playing it
Avatar 7:09pm
djnogoodnick:

I have not yet made it up to Vermont at all despite being only from the Philly area and living in NYC for the last 14 years. I should rectify that!
Avatar 7:12pm
djnogoodnick:

Always great to meet someone who appreciates them! I think "A Better Land" in particular is criminally underheard.
  7:13pm
wendy del formaggio:

Come to Vermont! You can take Amtrak! If you come to Bellows Falls / Brattleboro area, lemme know and I’ll give you a tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Asheville Jon:

i found Second Wind in a thrift store way back when, listed to that *a lot*. also accumulated all the other OE albums too. turned a buch of people onto BA/OE too.
aren't all of them underheard? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Asheville Jon:

bunch*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Asheville Jon:

there's also a lot of good Auger stuff available too, pre and post OE
Avatar 7:16pm
djnogoodnick:

Yes all of them! Although I admit I don't like Alex Lingterwood's vocals as much as Bryan's own, or the instrumentals.
Avatar 7:16pm
djnogoodnick:

And yes! I got into the Mod 60s Julie Driscoll stuff first.

woo hoo! wendy del formaggio! Just read that you are gearing up to join the drummer stream!
  8:08pm
wendy del formaggio:

Thanks, WR! Yes, I am literally gearing up. I only have a few of the pieces of audio equipment I’ll need. My Sweetwater rep is gonna LOVE me! That said, I am really thrilled. And a bit anxious!
Avatar 8:12pm
djnogoodnick:

I'm sure you'll be great. I never did any of the kind of DJing where you get on mic before this and my setup is complete crap. I could use a better mic and a proper mixer but have limited space here in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm

Mxter Baba, baby!
Avatar 8:17pm
djnogoodnick:

Hi Mxter!
  8:18pm
wendy del formaggio:

Nick, you coulda fooled me. Other than some stream glitches, your show sounds great. You sound comfortable and adept on the mic. And this music is FAB. I only recognize a few songs / artists so far, and it’s always a treat to hear stuff I love but don’t know.
Avatar 8:20pm
djnogoodnick:

Thank you Wendy! I love Monday evenings with Kim so now I'll have double reason to love them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Asheville Jon:

love Hot Rats. i am always amazed at how the cd version has a very different mix and sound when compared to an original vinyl pressing.
  Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
WR:

Asheville Jon, your comment makes me curious to look to see if the Zappa family has released deluxe editions of Hot Rats and Uncle Meat.
  Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
WR:

Schedule change today, no ARB, no Cha Cha Heels, instead we all scream for Primal Ice Cream with solo mon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Asheville Jon:

well, let me clarify: i bought the cd version when it was originally released back in the lat 80's/early 90s? got really used to it. then i found an original vinyl lp for $1 at a flea market, and it was like listening to a very different album. not sure what the Zappa family has remixed/re-released since then. there aresome pretty sweet 'hot rats sessions' that i've listened to on youtube.
Avatar 8:32pm
djnogoodnick:

FZ never stopped messing with his mixes until he passed and some of them are atrocious (no offense FZ wherever you are!). It was the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm

Damnit--sorry Solo Mon! I wish we had a better system to inform us of these schedule changes..
  8:34pm
wendy del formaggio:

Aww shucks, thanks Nick! I usually only listen to Global Grease on the archives, but I do almost every week. Her show is so damn good. I will be proud to be her radio neighbor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
solo mon:

ah dont worry abt it, nick! freeform radio knowhatimean?? ;-)
Avatar 8:39pm
djnogoodnick:

I do! Except what you do sounds like it takes incredible planning.
  8:41pm
Dean:

At the advent of the CD, mastering was abominably bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
coelacanth∅:

remasters are still often terrible. they always will be, because people who grew up with crappy sound and ugly trends are more and more going to be the ones remastering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
coelacanth∅:

(ie: most popular 80s music, where sensory stimulation was the primary objective)
Avatar 8:46pm
djnogoodnick:

I actually think they've gotten better but often wish they would just leave well enough alone. Most albums should sound like the year they are recorded in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Manta:

very groovy last set, NGN! the scaries are definitely gone after that energy boost! thanks for a lovely show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
chresti:

Wendy! Where will your show be on the drummer stream?
  8:50pm
wendy del formaggio:

“Most albums should sound like the year they are recorded in.” YES! Nicely put. I’m stealing that one. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
coelacanth∅:

i agree in that most of them -or many of them? are better than most of them were; but there're still really bad ones coming out all the time
...example the ramones reissues a couple years ago. sound like complete shit! thin, drums way up, vocals up...totally loses the force and the urgency that was the main thing about the ramones' first 4 albums (the ones that matter)
  8:52pm
wendy del formaggio:

This past year I bought a few CDs that have the original mono mix of the album and then the stereo mix of the same album. The stereo mixes are always awful and irrelevant.
  8:54pm
Dean:

Ward Marston is my hero. He transcribes and remixes ancient recordings of vocal, opera, and piano recitals with an ear to fair trade-offs. Marston has been blind since early youth. Somehow I think that fact has worked to his advantage.

Albums should sound not like the year in which they were recorded, but in the space in which they were recorded.
Avatar 8:55pm
djnogoodnick:

The worst is thanks to streaming services you often can *only* hear the remastered versions. It's like trying to hunt down the original "Star Wars"..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
coelacanth∅:

semantics! in any case i don't want to hear snappy bright drums on a free song, or beatles, or steppenwolf ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Asheville Jon:

thanks for a great show tonight !!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
chresti:

Thanks Nick!
  Swag For Life Member 8:56pm

Thank you! Nick!
  8:57pm
wendy del formaggio:

Thanks, Nick! Have a good week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm selling all my records, but digitizing many of them first -so i'll still have faithful versions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm

Thanks Nick!
