Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
chris in the redwoods:

i have not done the statistical analysis, francis. my gut feeling is that i have appreciated a great many covers just as much or even more than the original. then there's the edge cases, where an unreleased version is, technically, the original, but a released version is known more widely as the original (i.e. Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U vs Sinead's version). in sum, i love covers something fierce. :)
Avatar 4:18pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@francis: I would say that's a blanket Statement. Which might be appropriate re Covers ...& shut ins pun of choice... One thing a good Cover may do is throw light on the Composition from a different angle. Which is worthy - but not necessarily better... Also only one thing it may do...
Oh chris is beating me to this...
  4:18pm
judy from croton:

Sometimes they enrich, or expand. Sufjen Stevens' Ring Them Bells and Herbie Hancock and Tina Turner's Edith and the Kingpin come to mind
Avatar 4:21pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& it's often which you hear first. Aha...
Only once have I 'written' something that a person with a more powerful voice sang. Don't know how people more accustomed to that ride feel - but I found it quite remarkable...
Avatar 4:22pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...TheWho for instance have been called a PeteTownshend coverband...
  4:23pm
wind:

Beautiful simply gorgeous
  4:23pm
Dean:

Just to complicate the cover-vs.-original discussion a bit: does a band's live performance of an earlier studio recording count as a cover? I think I prefer the Genesis Live versions of many of the songs that appeared on the band's earlier albums. And what about classical music? What *isn't* a cover? What *was* the original?
  4:25pm
francis:

Again the important qualifier was "most". Sure there are definitely some that are better, like Cash singing Hurt, but I find that even when I've heard the cover first, I'll still like the orig.

Covers do have an advantage in that they have an updated sound, which can be appealing to the tastes which are current.
Avatar 4:26pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but what %age ...Originals closer presumably to Source. Like Gershwin piano rolls... But some people how more powerful skills of interpretation. Conductors & Ensembles...
Recordings unless spontaneous maybe just one Interpretation - & perhaps artificial or sterile @ that compared to Live. & often the Band / Artist themselves finds it 'opens up' more later ...so why not someone else doing the same for it?
Avatar 4:29pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Detroit Cobras did covers exclusively yeah ? & they were great. Recently noted people saying they prefer covers of Beatlesongs ...just when I was thinking how definitively TheBeatles covered others. They started as a hardworking club band of course... Few are those who don't do Covers. Any ?
  4:29pm

@Phillippe: For instance Badfinger are marvelous, but their 'Without You' fails for just not hitting the note Nilsson can...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm

Curious note on the Three Dog Night wikipedia page: they've gone through 31 different members since their inception. 2 have died so far, but surprisingly neither was a drummer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
coelacanth∅:

i usually like the original better
- but then there's Wilson Pickett's hey jude, and the beatles' rock & roll music, and both Aretha's and Mavis' the weight, and Harry Nilsson's without you, and big blood's planet caravan - well that one's close. . .
but i always like hearing an original cover

Coming exactly between TheWho & Hendrix - Cream get left off the shortlists now. But I was as into their records as a little kid as much as anybody's is the truth of it.

I adored Peter Gabriel until my love waned. That's just the fickleness of human admiration.

There are "live" albums and "live" albums. Warren Dewey, who engineered Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus told me how he spent time with Lowell in the studio redoing the solos.

i love Gabriel's first 4 (5?) solo albums; but still only consider early genesis "pretty good".
wind & wuthering -barely a prog album, is my favorite genesis album.

Fave Genesis album is probably Selling England. It's certainly the one most played in my experience.

From Genesis to Revelation. Certainly mysterioso prog.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm

I'm just assuming that my gateway prog will not be featured. Marillion rarely makes the cut.

Best Genesis album that has in fact nothing to do with Genesis is to my ear Acqua Fragile's first album.

Had the impression the early Genesis was like KingCrimson before reaching puberty. Which is not necessarily terrible...

Nor does IQ, Handy.

FYI: The prog show actually launches next Monday, but Ken will host the first ep. Mandl begins his weekly stint Oct. 24.

I think people just don't like them, Carm. But they were one of the first bands I ever got into, and I maintain quite a number of soft spots. Julie even played "Grendel" at my request in an "epic songs" hour!

How do I redeem all the Prog Points I accumulated by playing in a Court of the Crimson King-themed D&D[ish] adventure at an actual D&D[ish] convention in a former Playboy Club in the town where D&D was invented. I mean, it's a lot.
