Doug, I'm so sorry to hear about your poor kitty! The hardest thing is knowing death is imminent and not being able to do anything but comfort them. This cat is teensy. Has always been so. Never more than 10 pounds. But she is the fiercest creature ever to bestride this mortal coil. In a house of four humans, three cats and a 75-lb dog, she has been the most alpha. The absolute ruler. Sometimes benevolent, sometimes not. An amazing life force.

We had no choice BUT to treat Ozzie for Cushing's-he was up all night, acting a bit crazy, peeing constantly (sometimes in the house, which hasn't happened since he was a pup), we were falling apart. Part of the problem was his regular vet misdiagnosed him with hypothyroidism, the thyroid meds made him worse. Saw a high-falutin Internal Medicine Vet, stopped the thyroid meds (improved right away), started him on meds. It does need frequent monitoring of his bloods, and costs a fortune (testing, Internal Medicine Vet, prescription meds), but he's mostly back to acting like an older version of himself (who isn't?).

Re business buy-outs, reminds me of English avant-garde poet Tom Raworth, who ran a small press in London in the late 60s which was briefly (in that crazy, topsy-turvy era) both credible and vaguely commercially saleable. One day the big boys came knocking, Jonathon Cape wanting to buy it as a hip 'out-there' imprint. Cape himself held the meeting with Tom and asked 'How do you see this business deal developing' to which Tom gave the immortal reply 'You give me the money and then you fuck off'.

Sorry for sorrows at home, Doug. I get reassured and encouraged when people of course realize substantial, so-particular emotional place of any pet and extend genuinely sympathetic hearts and thoughts.

A current thing in multi-directional matters of losses and animals: After thinking occasionally about a cat for her home, when she's never had one, my girlfriend's thinking on it accelerated almost impulsively a few weeks ago and a small, fluffy, pear-shaped, 8 year old cat was adopted. Five days later, girlfriend's mum died. The "hey, scratch and pet me," cat has been a VERY important extra comfort/contact/chat/attention buddy in grieving period (made harder by international travel restrictions that deferred any timely visit to join family and attend services), and girlfriend believes fluffball arrival time, which seemed so random, was no accident.
