The story behind this piece is fascinating. I'll go into it at the break.

Thanks for this Larry, I am only familiar with the Electric Counterpoint "Little Fluffy Clouds" stuff. I never listened to this part!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm

Hey Kurt! I like that piece, too. I'll save it for the next such excursion.

I'm not really well versed in modern classical music. I'm trying to remedy that situation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Michael 98145:

This is fascinating
Avatar 3:21pm
Erica:

80s classical music is more on the avant-garde side isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
Funky16Corners:

Most modern classical that I've heard, even going back to the teens and 20s is pushing the envelope with experimentation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
zzz:

hey DJ F16C!
love this Reich piece, heavy stuff (not to mention the pat metheny electric counterpoint that is on the CD release)

Steve Reich's music changed the way I hear the world. It changed the way I listen to sounds in the environments and everything
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Michael 98145:

Like how the cover art evokes train tracks ... www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Alex! His music, and the way it is composed really changes everything going forward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Funky16Corners:

@Michael, one side is train tracks, the other guitar fretboards (at least on the CD)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Funky16Corners:

Barber composed this overture for a non-musical play that dates to the late 1700s

There's a great, jazz guitar version of this second prelude by Kenny Burrell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Funky16Corners:

This is one of my favorite pieces of music, period, across all genres.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Michael 98145:

Gershwin was quite amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, indeed. I can't think of another composer who was so successful in the pop market, with his show tunes, and also in the classical realm, and he didn't even make it to 40, Can you imagine what he would have been capable of had he lived?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
coelacanth∅:

^ mine as well. i put it in my main bedtime playlist, twice. once near the beginning and once ~2.3 way ( a few hours) in by a different orchestra & conductor.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm

totally agree larry re: debussy and ravel's wide-ranging influences
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Little Danny:

oh man larry this piece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, this is a spectacular work. Composed for twin string orchestras, based on a 16th century hymn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Little Danny:

very strong associations with this, i had it on a cassette in my early '20s that i listened to on repeat for months
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Funky16Corners:

Used to great effect in the film Master and Commander
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
Funky16Corners:

Previous to this, I only knew Vaughan Williams by The Lark Ascending and a few other things and this piece totally rewired the music centers of my brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Little Danny:

just astounding beauty here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Funky16Corners:

I can understand why they used this in Master and Commander. Vaughan Williams has the strings swell, ebb and flow like waves, but there are moments that are elegiac, as if they had been composed for a funeral.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
StringOFperils:

In a way, all standard romantic film scoring is lifted from composers like Vaughan-Willams, Elgar, smetana, Strauss, etc...no surprise that Hollywood mines this stuff. Actually that's where some of them went
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Funky16Corners:

Many of the great film composers created classical pieces as well.
