	👻 9:11pm austinrich: A big tip of the hat to a CBC Radio Documentary from 2005 that I listened to, and really, really enjoyed. I'm sampled it a bunch over the years... but there's so much in it, I like to returning to it.

	👻 9:15pm austinrich: Some of these Edison Cylinders are gonna be pretty scratchy. I did the best to make it all listenable, but... you know... use your imagination.
	9:16pm Mr Fab: The hiss of old recordings is so part of the music, it's weird without it.
	👻 9:18pm austinrich: Some things are cleaner than other. I think MAC used to say: just listen through the dirt.
	👻 9:19pm austinrich: I just liked the idea of a Sullivan on Sullivan Cylinder mash-up, but to make it sound okay took a few passes.
	9:20pm Krys O.: Took a tour of the Edison Museum in West Orange years ago. Good friend Chris Butler did some recordings there too.
	👻 9:20pm austinrich: Arthur Sulivan's concern that bad music could be accidentally put on was "forever" is interesting, to say the least.
	👻 9:27pm austinrich: I've never been up that way, but if I ever am, I would love to visit that museum, Krys O.
	9:28pm HyperDose: Was Edison the first "record" label?
	👻 9:29pm austinrich: Hmmmmm. Good question, HyperDose. I mean... he had stars and contracts and his artists "toured" and dig endorsements... so... yes?
	👻 9:29pm austinrich: But people did all of that without recorded music, too... it's just that Edison was organizing it around his inventions, rather than "popular" songs.
	9:30pm HyperDose: Can't imagine how many filing cabinets Edison had!
	9:30pm Mr Fab: Fascinating question, HyperDose. Among Edisons' many innovations, he was the first to say, "I don't hear a single."

	👻 9:31pm austinrich: I mean, in those days, people didn't really think recorded music was much more than a "fad." I think it was the 20's, when it had been going for almost two decades, that people started to think it was gonna stick around.
	👻 9:33pm austinrich: I tried so hard to track down this recording that he talks about - "Yum Yum Yum." Couldn't find an easy copy, just this excerpt.
	9:34pm HyperDose: The physical "record" disc wasn't invented yet, but the contractual legally binding "record" was of course a thing. So a record label then was just a company that stored IP, which is still true today. My mind is blown!
	9:34pm Mr Fab: Can't say I blame them - recordings were so lo-fi, everyone probably thought that it was no substitute for live performances.

	👻 9:35pm austinrich: I think Edison might be the first "label," only in that: he was the first person to approach the business side of recordings as shrewdly as they do now.
	9:37pm HyperDose: Amazing how that hasn't changed over the last hundred years
	👻 9:38pm austinrich: Totally. People think about the music industry as being "modern," but in a lot of ways, the version we have in the US is essentially a product of Reconstruction.
	9:43pm WR: Interesting audio survey.
	👻 9:46pm austinrich: I try to keep it interesting, WR. At least, I find it interesting. My goal has always been: what kind of radio would I like to accidentally tune in for?
	9:46pm HyperDose: I didn't know what to expect. Glad I tuned in :)
	👻 9:47pm austinrich: I am in love with these "Teen Line" compilations that "Hyped To Death" assembled way back when. If anyone else was collecting these, I would love to trade. I know I'm missing a few.
	👻 9:50pm austinrich: On the subject of Edison, and the history of "recording as a technology" (and the cultural relationships with technology) is covered in a VERY nerdy book (that gets very technical - be warned), called "Perfecting Sound Forever" by Greg Milner. Fascinating stuff about the backlashes against new technology.
	👻 9:51pm austinrich: I'm still looking for a good Marconi Documentary. Anyone know of one?
	9:53pm Mr Fab: I'm very familiar with film and music history, yet I'm woefully uneducated in radio history. I was a radio-tv-film major, and took a film history course, but i don't remember a radio history course even being offered.
	👻 9:54pm austinrich: I was looking for a radio history class when I was in college. Never found one. Almost offered to teach one, but... you know. I was a student.
	👻 9:55pm austinrich: You know I had to address the "Rush" problem if you're doing a show about radio...
	9:56pm HyperDose: Oh 2010, that book is going to have a lot of great info. Buying it now!
	👻 9:56pm austinrich: I loved reading that book, but at least one friend reviewed it with, "too technical." Meh. I found it interesting.
	👻 9:58pm austinrich: This might be my most "Phineas Narco" sounding show.
	👻 10:05pm austinrich: This particular edit of the Flaming Lips song was somthing I made for a show in 2009, also radio-centric. It seemed like a good fit for this show, too.
	👻 10:08pm austinrich: I've sampled that Mike Staff tape a million times, but I never get sick of it. I'll probably do another re-mix of that tape soon enough.
	10:10pm WR: History of radio and television: Erik Barnouw did 3 vol history of broadcasting in the USA. Vol 1 is of course mostly on radio. www.betterworldbooks.com... He taught at Columbia University, had a friend who took classes with him in the 70s. His book Tube of Plenty condensed the history and went more into people consuming tv. www.betterworldbooks.com... To me his observations are still relevant to people who spend hours a day scrolling their ph0ne.

	👻 10:13pm austinrich: The Mike Staff Tape is a Grunge DJ from the late '90's, who released a self-published book / tape in the "self-help" vein. It's for wanna-be DJs to listen to, to get pumped up to pursue a career in radio. He includes an air-check of his own show... which is abysmal! It's an amazing tape I found at the Public Library in Portland, when I was a student at PSU. I was just randomly ordering in anything "radio" related to listen to / check out. That tape came in from the Interlibrary Loan one day...

	👻 10:17pm austinrich: I mean, everything I do is because I listened to too much Don Joyce, but a HUGE tip of the hat to him for the idea of this show. It's my attempt at what he used to do so elegantly, and where he would improvise, I am a pre-producer. But certainly, he is never far from my thoughts.

	10:22pm WR: The Barnouw books are in the NY public library. They may be dated but are interesting. I read them years ago, still have them in storage if the rats and roaches haven't got to them. You've compiled interesting range of audio history portraits. As allergic as I am to Ken Burns, will check out Empire of the Air.

	10:23pm Xeres of Xeron: My dad was friends with Alan Freed just prior to his discovery of rock and roll.

	👻 10:29pm austinrich: I'm with you, WR, with regard to Mr. Burn. They way I was first exposed to that documentary was when Don Joyce chopped it up on his show, so if you can hear it that way, I recommend that.

	10:30pm Mr Fab: True! Crime (the band) were great. It took Sonic Youth's cover of that classic for me to discover them. Got a 7" bootleg of 4 of their singles and played the heck out of it.
	10:30pm Xeres of Xeron: Another great radio personality that I think of is John Peel. I have a certain fascination for the pirate radio ships off the coast of Great Britain.
	👻 10:32pm austinrich: When I first moved to PDX, I met this guy who was in advertising who slipped me a Crime bootleg CD and made his own labels for his personal liquor bottles. That was sort of a "snapshot" of what I thought Portland People were like: they all work real jobs, and listen to Crime.
	👻 10:32pm austinrich: I think of Wolfman, but I'm a child of TV and movies, so "American Graffiti" probably had something to do with that. But the person I probably logged the most hours with is Don Joyce.
	10:33pm HyperDose: @Xeres Have you seen Pirate Radio (also known as The Boat That Rocked)? A very fun movie that the lovely Bill Nighy and late Philip Seymour Hoffman in starring roles.

	👻 10:34pm austinrich: I'm usually fascinated with UK DJs, but I think it's the "oddness" that I appreciate. They sounded nothing like American DJs! I think that's why I liked The Goon Show so much. It was like Firesign... but skewed in a really strange and wonderful way.
	10:34pm HyperDose: American Graffiti was my first exposure to Wolfman. The sticky popsicles!
	👻 10:35pm austinrich: I dug that film, too. Certainly more of a comedy, but great nonetheless.
	10:36pm Mr Fab: Peel's post-pirate pre-BBC years were spent in Southern California radio...which brings us back to Beefheart. 'twas his SoCal gig that led Peel to discover the good Captain.
	👻 10:36pm austinrich: My parents / uncles / aunts used to listen to Wolfman, and would talk about him very reverently. So when I saw American Graffiti, I was sort of primed to think he was a legend already.
	👻 10:37pm austinrich: Mr. Fab: Really? I'd never heard that story. Totally makes sense, and of course: leave it to Peel to be more well traveled than I thought. I should probably look into his story.
	👻 10:40pm austinrich: (I'll admit: my knowledge of Mr. Peel is a little more limited than I would like.)
	10:41pm Mr Fab: Peel was going by the name John Ravencroft then. He should have kept it. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said that he and his friends all assumed that Wolfman was black.
	10:41pm WR: John Peel's auto bio is good read. Too bad he died before his finished it, though his family completed it for him. He also did radio in Texas / Oklahoma area early on.
	👻 10:43pm austinrich: Hmmmm. I'll have to check out that biography. I like a lot of Peel sessions, but I guess I don't know much about him. Huh.
	10:46pm Xeres of Xeron: When I was in college I once met a fellow student who kept a notebook full of every call-sign of every radio station in America. He had memorized a lot of it. He was the first person to explain to me that you needed to take a little test and get a card from the FCC before you could be a DJ.
	👻 10:46pm austinrich: So, this show doesn't exactly get to the "end" of our History Lesson, and I've been meaning to get on with the process of making Part III. So maybe this will get me off my duff to finally finish it. As I recall, I was almost half-way done when a break-in at our house sort of de-railed me.
	👻 10:47pm austinrich: Xeres: I loved the idea of a "radio network" when I was a kid, but I never took it that far. That's wild. I never got a card from the FCC, but I've logged a number of radio hours. But I'm a "noob" by comparison.
	10:47pm Xeres of Xeron: You could name a station and he would tell you what town it was in.
	👻 10:48pm austinrich: I wonder what happened to that person.
	10:49pm Xeres of Xeron: Really? KWVA made me get a card before they let me do the Brain Spackle show, 1995. Though come to think of it, they never checked whether I really had one.
	👻 10:50pm austinrich: Yeah, they let me walk in at 4 AM, drunk, one morning in 1998 and I just "took over." And I've been doing it ever since. (Not at 4 AM, and not always drunk.)
	10:50pm Xeres of Xeron: I remember taking the test and getting the card, and then being disappointed that they never made me prove it. LOL
	👻 10:51pm austinrich: (I didn't tell anyone I was drunk... but... I had come from the bar to do my first show.)
	10:53pm Xeres of Xeron: Eno would be rolling in his grave if he was dead.
	10:54pm Mr Fab: I never got a card either! A friend DJ showed me the ropes, and I would just sit in. College students late at night, no one cared..
	👻 10:54pm austinrich: When the Estranged first started putting out records, I declared they were "The New Wipers." They were from PDX, they had a little bit of that sound, and they had fantastic shows. But... they never really stuck with it.
	👻 10:55pm austinrich: When I was Programming Director at KPSU in Portland (again, I didn't have a card), people would come in with cards, and want to show it. I would look at it, and say, "Cool!" Then give them a show. We never kept a record or anything. And we gave any student a show, really.

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

	👻 9:31pm austinrich: I mean, in those days, people didn't really think recorded music was much more than a "fad." I think it was the 20's, when it had been going for almost two decades, that people started to think it was gonna stick around.

	9:34pm HyperDose: The physical "record" disc wasn't invented yet, but the contractual legally binding "record" was of course a thing. So a record label then was just a company that stored IP, which is still true today. My mind is blown!

	👻 9:38pm austinrich: Totally. People think about the music industry as being "modern," but in a lot of ways, the version we have in the US is essentially a product of Reconstruction.

Fascinating stuff about the backlashes against new technology.

	9:53pm Mr Fab: I'm very familiar with film and music history, yet I'm woefully uneducated in radio history. I was a radio-tv-film major, and took a film history course, but i don't remember a radio history course even being offered.

	10:10pm WR: History of radio and television: Erik Barnouw did 3 vol history of broadcasting in the USA. Vol 1 is of course mostly on radio. www.betterworldbooks.com... He taught at Columbia University, had a friend who took classes with him in the 70s. His book Tube of Plenty condensed the history and went more into people consuming tv. www.betterworldbooks.com... To me his observations are still relevant to people who spend hours a day scrolling their ph0ne.

	👻 10:13pm austinrich: The Mike Staff Tape is a Grunge DJ from the late '90's, who released a self-published book / tape in the "self-help" vein. It's for wanna-be DJs to listen to, to get pumped up to pursue a career in radio. He includes an air-check of his own show... which is abysmal! It's an amazing tape I found at the Public Library in Portland, when I was a student at PSU. I was just randomly ordering in anything "radio" related to listen to / check out. That tape came in from the Interlibrary Loan one day...

You've compiled interesting range of audio history portraits. As allergic as I am to Ken Burns, will check out Empire of the Air.

	10:30pm Xeres of Xeron: Another great radio personality that I think of is John Peel. I have a certain fascination for the pirate radio ships off the coast of Great Britain.
	👻 10:32pm austinrich: When I first moved to PDX, I met this guy who was in advertising who slipped me a Crime bootleg CD and made his own labels for his personal liquor bottles. That was sort of a "snapshot" of what I thought Portland People were like: they all work real jobs, and listen to Crime.
	👻 10:32pm austinrich: I think of Wolfman, but I'm a child of TV and movies, so "American Graffiti" probably had something to do with that. But the person I probably logged the most hours with is Don Joyce.

	👻 10:34pm austinrich: I'm usually fascinated with UK DJs, but I think it's the "oddness" that I appreciate. They sounded nothing like American DJs! I think that's why I liked The Goon Show so much. It was like Firesign... but skewed in a really strange and wonderful way.

	10:41pm Mr Fab: Peel was going by the name John Ravencroft then. He should have kept it. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said that he and his friends all assumed that Wolfman was black.
	10:41pm WR: John Peel's auto bio is good read. Too bad he died before his finished it, though his family completed it for him. He also did radio in Texas / Oklahoma area early on.

	10:46pm Xeres of Xeron: When I was in college I once met a fellow student who kept a notebook full of every call-sign of every radio station in America. He had memorized a lot of it. He was the first person to explain to me that you needed to take a little test and get a card from the FCC before you could be a DJ.
	👻 10:46pm austinrich: So, this show doesn't exactly get to the "end" of our History Lesson, and I've been meaning to get on with the process of making Part III. So maybe this will get me off my duff to finally finish it. As I recall, I was almost half-way done when a break-in at our house sort of de-railed me.
	👻 10:47pm austinrich: Xeres: I loved the idea of a "radio network" when I was a kid, but I never took it that far. That's wild. I never got a card from the FCC, but I've logged a number of radio hours. But I'm a "noob" by comparison.

	👻 10:54pm austinrich: When the Estranged first started putting out records, I declared they were "The New Wipers." They were from PDX, they had a little bit of that sound, and they had fantastic shows. But... they never really stuck with it.
	👻 10:55pm austinrich: When I was Programming Director at KPSU in Portland (again, I didn't have a card), people would come in with cards, and want to show it. I would look at it, and say, "Cool!" Then give them a show. We never kept a record or anything. And we gave any student a show, really.
