Hello, doctorjazz! How are you and family doing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
Doug Schulkind:

Someone has switched to double bass. It could be either of them!
  Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
WR:

Since Dave usually lets his guest lead, at the beginning I thought I knew which was William and which was Dave but lost the thread by the time the switch to bass violin was made.

gosh this is all so perfect right now!!

Love the Monongohela!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
doctorjazz:

Thanks for asking, Doug! We're all sick in a coldish kind of way (like most of the world), the house is alive, with the sound of coughing, to paraphrase Julie Andrews). I'm the only healthy one. All COVID tests have been negative, just routine winter stuff. Not sleeping much, though-13 year old pooch is up pacing all night, me'thinks he's developing doggie dementia, or at least an anxiety disorder.

If you click on the link in the ALBUM column of my playlist, you will go to the playlist for Music For a Free World and see a picture of Dave's guest.

@WR
Dave is an excellent bass player as well as a baritone saxist. During at least one upcoming duet you will hear him on bass for sure.

@doctorjazz
Glad to hear you're all hanging in there.

@ARB
I have a certain fondness for the Monogahela, but love would be overstating things.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
doctorjazz:

I've seen Dave in concert, bari sax, singing, never on bass (but he always had a bass player with him)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
I think I read somewhere that Dave's first instrument was the electric bass!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:46pm
doctorjazz:

It's an interesting double-many reed players double on other reeds, trumpet players play other horns, not that many cross into other instrument classes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
There's also the not uncommon double of bass and tuba. We will have heard Dave on both during this show.
Avatar 2:50pm
ARB:

Haha, where does the Allegheny rank?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm
Doug Schulkind:

@ARB
The Allegheny used to be rank, but Pittsburgh has cleaned up its act pretty good,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Doug Schulkind:

Dave on bass here, so wonderfully!

I got giardia canoeing in the allegheny but still had a great time. Love these vocals !!!

Such a trooper!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm

Dave has had a number of vocalists on as guests. He did a show with Lisa Sokolov last year, but I don't think they did a live duet.

I had fun at Cha Cha Heels NYE party last night, although there's a lot of shoes half-filled with champagne strewn about thew house
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm

Dave would never share this on his own show, but I can...

Check out Dave's Bandcamp page for some sonic treats, including a brand-new release, Smooth Free Jazz: sewelson.bandcamp.com
  Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
WR:

Dave did do a duet with Sokolov on the Dec 19 2020 show. They did a short piece together in the middle of the episode and then Sokolov did a couple of solo pieces at the end.

Ha, I'm supposed to be doing chores but now I'm dual streaming Sewelson shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Doug Schulkind:

@WR
Thanks for correcting my memory. I didn't look closely at that show since it fell in 2020. I've been sticking to 2021 for some reason or other.
  Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
WR:

I missed the Gianni show. Looks like they had fun. Like they are doing in this duet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Doug Schulkind:

Much fun was had. This was the longest duet of 2021.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
doctorjazz:

Who's playing what on this (Gianni plays multiple reeds, I Dave on the percussion/piano, other instruments)?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
doctorjazz:

Electronics?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
doctorjazz:

Prepared piano?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Doug Schulkind:

Gianni has cycled through a half dozen instruments, at least.
  Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
WR:

Gianni has done multiple reeds, piano, percussion, Sewelson bari and out of tune piano.
  Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
WR:

And I probably left something out. Expecting them to even start singing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
doctorjazz:

I like Dave's singing (it's a lot like his playing-he'll hover arounds the note, slide into it, very cool)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

@WR
What makes you think the out-of-tune piano is on Dave's side? I've been in his apartment and don't remember seeing a piano. Maybe he's using an out-of-tune piano app.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
doctorjazz:

It sounds more "prepared" than out of tune, the notes have some dulled sound to them, not the usual sharp percussive piano sound (AND, an electronic/app could make these sounds, I'm sure).
  Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
WR:

Ok, now not so sure, was that Dave on soprano. But I thought I heard him recently tell someone he had got a piano at his place. And, agreed, some of the piano notes sounded plucked or stroked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm

Brian in UK:

Gina, can you imagine a time when Delgados? might let you in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
Gina Bacon:

I'm not sure, Brian. Things are pretty bad here in Nashville for the forseeable future...and they've been using the showroom more as their own event space, which is wonderful!
I am set up to have bands at my place, whenever it feels safe enough...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:38pm

Gina, well your programme is unique as Dave's. So here's to the future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
doctorjazz:

Live music/bands at the Matinee, that is great news indeed! Of course, it seems like social distancing is never going away (my cup half empty impression. The cup half full impression is that this latest outbreak is so contagious and spreading so quickly that soon everyone will be immunized or immune and the whole thing is over. Likely be somewhere between the cups).
