Hello, fellow Irene worshipers.

An interesting (to me) note about the Velvet Underground documentary: There are two references to the Mothers of Invention -- both, I think, courtesy of Maureen Tucker (although I'm not entirely sure about that), and both extremely negative, including the absurd claim that the Mothers were hippies who advocated Flower Power. (REALLY???) And although it's not in the documentary, Lou Reed supposedly once said that Frank Zappa was the most untalented musician he had ever heard.

And yet when Zappa was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it was Lou Reed who gave the induction speech. Does anyone know the story behind that??

@Peter K.: sounds par for the course, sadly. I heard that Boulez both despised and respected Zappa, so people can choose their take. I think Boulez saw potential, but missed what Zappa actually did, a missed opportunity

Brian, we saw that wonderful doc, but it doesn't really answer the question about Lou vs. Frank. Lou at times seemed to have contrarian views on certain people, so it makes his opinions hard to pin down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Irene Trudel:

Good news for your little one, βrian! We get our boosters next Sunday. Still praying to the higher powers that this pandemic is crawling toward closure.

What a wonderful album Aerial is, by my reckoning a new album must be due, once a decade by my maths!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
fred:

I never talked to Boulez, I was uninteresting to him, rightly. But I saw him make a bigwig wait while he chatted with a cleaning lady. Power move for sure, but he did care about the ignored people
  1:11pm
Peter K.:

I think it's fair to say that Lou had a change of heart about Frank at some point.

"It's very rare in life to know someone who affects things, changes in a positive way," Reed began. "Frank Zappa was such a person, and of the many regrets I have in life, not knowing him better is one of them." Listing Zappa's many accomplishments, which also (in many ways) echoed his own, Reed went on to make his strongest remarks. "Frank was a force for reason and honesty in a business deficient in those areas. As we reward some with money for the amusement they supply to the cultural masses, I think the induction of Frank Zappa in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame distinguishes the Hall as well as the inductee."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm

Must see that doc!

For the VU doc, I had a badly busted bass speaker near my head. But yeah, you need a big screen. 90% of this thing is split-screen x2 (at least)

Pat Martino's music is transcendent.

Sadly, it wasn't that many years ago that Irene and I saw a remarkable double bill at the Blue Note of Pat Martino's group and the duo of Larry Coryell and Vic Juris. All three are now gone.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Sean in Bristol UK:

Going on another tangent here, clocks went back last weekend over in the continent of the Americas, does anyone feel the same way as I do, why? It seems such a waste of time, affects our moods. I love the clocks going forward in March, Spring/Summer evenings with plenty of light. Arizona/Hawaii seems to have the right idea!
  1:46pm
Listener Robert:

Just got back from my own walk on the Sussex Branch rail trail. My cardiologist told me to stay active, so now football season's over (I coach children) I thought I'd take advantage of the nice day. I should've taken the laptop to record some stills and/or video and put them up like Ms. Trudel's.

  1:48pm
Listener Robert:

Actually, Sean, setting the clocks BACK seemed to boost my mood this time. Could be the weather, though, which is great.

Daylight Saving Time is a joke. It's just an agreement to do everything an hour earlier. Why not just change your schedule, instead of the clocks? Where else in life do we adjust the measuring stick rather than the thing being measured?
  1:49pm

Let's have Heat Saving Time and adjust the thermometers in the winter so it'll be "warmer"!

Same here, Listener Robert, it wasn’t such a wrench this time. Five or six weeks to go before light starts returning at 2 minutes a day!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
TonyR:

Yay, Listener Robert. I spiked my 5-mile bridgewalk today, but it is so beautiful out there. 2 more days of it, I hope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Irene Trudel:

Absolutely fred! Still a lot of great musicians creating all the time. And Sean, I totally agree. There is no good reason to keep changing the clocks. I prefer having light a little later in the evening than the morning. Of course, Michael you may have a shorter day overall if you're in the NW. Robert, you may have a good idea there but I prefer moderation in heating. In our older UWS apt, the heat is cranked up to max and it's about 85 degrees in here!
