Been a busy beaver this weekend-went to see Fire Music Friday (good, but suffers from my usual complaint with music docs: not enough music). Then the Central Jersey Jazz Festival had Marcus Printup playing on a nearby town, did a really nice set. (Had an 18 year old tenor player who's quite amazing, Emilio Modeste). Today, hope to get to Somerville to catch Orin Evans. I could get used to this...

I listened to Schaap program last night, a rebroadcast from 2018. The program host who came after, who programs classical played Mozart Don Giovanni in memory of Schaap. Avatar 🥁 10:20am
Listener Gregory:

I think Schaap had a kind of obsession such that he was afraid of leaving out any bit of information that he happened to know. So, even when he reminded listeners of what he had said earlier, he ended up repeating all of it, because, you know, they might not remember what street the club in Boston was on or something. And this knowledge must not be lost!

Didn't pick up on Schaap early enuff to ever expect Music from him particularly, but only incidentally. I found it soothing somehow. Yes his discourse was not only lecture-like - but often digressive & even recursive. But wasn't even this a kind of entertainment? & of course - it's just like losing the largest Library of Jazz Knowledge that can ever be. His mentorship wasn't apparent to me - but is much remarked upon.
Incidentally - a good actual balance of Jazz Musics & Historical Education for Listening I've found is Dr. Grodon Vernick's 'Jazz Insights' on iTunes U (-niversity).
Perhaps too elementary for present company - but great pocket histories of specific artists & topics :

This is a Paul Motian composition. Did you say that? Sorry, I was out of the room for a moment.

Listener Gregory:

The Motian/Lovano/Frisell trio used to end sets with this song, with Motian just crashing the drum set. Very short performance that ended the set with an exclamation point.
