Had an extraordinary music experience in April 2015. Rzewski, performed a free concert in the upstairs dining area of a sprawling Pittsburgh seafood emporium called Wholey's. Rzewski played his beloved anti-fascist opus "The People United Will Never Be Defeated," pounding, caressing, extracting heart-swelling sounds from a rented upright piano before a rapt (and at the far tables in the back, noshing) audience. It was magnificent and utterly bizarre. (Nice Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story about it here: www.post-gazette.com...)

I think this is collective personnel for the album, so not saying everyone is on this track: Kenny Wheeler, Alberto Corvini, Enrico Rava (tp) Danilo Terenzi, Roswell Rudd (tb) Evan Parker (sop,ts) Maurizio Giammarco (sop,sopranino) Steve Lacy (sop) Steve Potts (as,sop) Eugenio Colombo (as,sop,bar) Massimo Urbani (ts) Maurizio Giammarco (ts,sop,fl,sopranino) Tommaso Vittorini (bar) Frederic Rzewski, Martin Joseph (p) Tristan Honsinger, Irene Aebi (cello) Kent Carter (cello,b) Roberto Bellatalla (b) Noel McGhie, Roberto Gatto (d) Paul Lytton (d,perc)

Doug Schulkind:

@TDK60
No Wholey's doesn't do music. Rzewski's son worked (works?) at the store. The event was the product of some creative flexibility on the part of management. The rented an upright piano and stuck it among the dine-in tables on the second floor. The music was supposed to be piped in throughout the entire market (a huge sprawling emporium), but the sound system didn't work. (I have always speculated that they pulled the plug after hearing the first few seconds of the performance. )
