Hey, Chris! Well, our mechanic, because he's really sweet and just a good person, got it so the trunk will open and put in a couple of screws to make sure the side panel won't fall off -- and didn't charge us a cent. So now hopefully at the end of this farce the maniac's insurance co. will pay out and we can get some more actual repairs done.

I actually got into Cirrus Minor because of the only interview Pekka Streng ever did. Julie, she wrote the lyrics to most of that album and I think all the singles so far. They do the music mostly cooperatively. The new EP in July is really cooperatively done, though Kate probably has more of the lyrics. She's a writer, after all.

We live by and are deeply with Newtown Creek, which has several (former) tributaries known as kills (Dutch Kills, English Kills): "kill" is just Dutch for "creek." But you get some nice polysemy with it in English (viz., "English Kills," supra). But it's mainly testament to our Superfund of a neighborhood and waterway.

Well, I'm as certain as I can be from several years of intense water study in NY, Bas -- I didn't realize it was not a contemporary word still! It's definitely the accepted wisdom here, that all the "-kill" forms are from the Dutch word for creek or stream.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
Handy Haversack:

Bas, from Wiki: "The term is derived from the Middle Dutch kille (kil in modern Dutch), meaning "riverbed" or "water channel". It is found in areas of Dutch influence in the Netherlands' former North American colony of New Netherland, primarily the Hudson and Delaware Valleys. "

It's funny -- it's the most prevalent Dutch word in my mind! I never even contemplated that it might not be in current use!

Also, there *is* video evidence of me on Newtown Creek paddling with Bill Murray and Jimmy Kimmel, which is ridiculous, but it's out there should anyone want to find it. I'm the taller one in the Yankees hat and (under my life jacket) the T-shirt that says

Ha, Chris! We once got a local's tour of cool Paris in exchange for two packs of American Spirits! This was in 2000, our first ever trip, after I had won some money. Our server at a restaurant commented she had smoked them when she lived in the States. Further conversation revealed she had lived *on our block* in Brooklyn. We went back the next night to give her a couple of packs, and she offered to take us out, introduce us to her friends, and show us the places they liked. We even passed Bastille Day with them! Great time.

Ξ²rian, I still noticed a good bit when we went back in 2016. I had quit that year. We were at our favorite bar from the first trip, which I found my muscle memory! And there was some great gypsy jazz going on. At the set break, the whole crowd spilled out side to smoke. I said to the bartender, "Tout le monde fume, et moi, je ne fume plus."
