Good morning Jeffrey! Morning folks! I was thinking of a good limerick, but couldn't remember any. Is this Irish music day?
  8:14am
Toothgrinder Tom:

@Sylvia vinyl is too perishable and too easily damaged by handling unlike cd’s (whenever I bought a new vinyl record back in the old days I would invariably get a thumb print or scratch on them within five minutes, despite being extra careful with how I handled them), and also the increasingly smaller circles towards the end of the record meant that less information could be put on the disc. Ridiculous!
Avatar 8:15am
TDK60:

Toothgrinder Tom. Only kidding! But, you can't play them repeatedly; switch around your tapes. I have hundreds of tapes, 30-40 years old, that still work well. I also have tons of records and CDs. Still buy CDs too (when I'm not unemployed during plagues). One thing I miss is a reel to reel tape deck.

  8:18am
Toothgrinder Tom:

However I will say one nice thing about a record is when you put one on, it just plays unless and until you get up to change it, so it forces you to listen to an entire side. I also miss how sides A and B seemed to have different ‘personalities’ if you will.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Every Medium has its own characteristics.
For one thing - CDs were Mastered terribly in the beginning - so there's a Before & After when talking about CD sound perhaps?
Point being made here: There's Sound & there's Convenience of format... The convenience of Digital is obvious. If convenience seems a bad word - try versatility...
The history of formats was kind of Expansion - expanding the sound & the equipment - & then when the Digital world came down - it reversed & became about Compression: how much can we take out for storage & transmission (online) & hope no one notices too much...
Analog means one thing is Analogous to another : a Sound Wave & record grooves or tape magnetism... With Digital - it's a question of how often you take a slice of that nice round sound wave - Sampling Rates... With Analog - all the Mechanical aspects are a detriment: damage every time you use it, preservation - getting records or tapes (tapes!) to go smoothly @ the right speed always...
CDs are Optical-Digital. So - some interesting Mechanics still... I think they gt a little ahead of themselves with Design for the sake of selling us all back our own Culture once again... & put the Market ahead of the Audio... So ever since it's been - how do we put back what we took out into them?...

  8:24am
Toothgrinder Tom:

@Revolution Rabbit not sure I follow all of what you wrote there but in the main I agree: I’ve read that sound engineers say that cd’s sound more like the master tapes of a recording (when we’ll engineered; as you say, the early ones were not), whereas vinyl has to them a flattened or distorted sound, which may in fact be the much longed for ‘warmth’ that vinyl enthusiasts often talk about.

That warm distorted sound was fluff attached to the stylus.

Jeffrey, I see that the Band's Stage Fright is being reissued with numerous unnecessary 'bonus tracks'. The interesting extra is a concert from the Albert Hall in '71. I remember being there, high point was Garth Hudson playing Chest Fever on the Albert Hall organ.
Avatar 8:30am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Digital is clearer - being numbers translated directly to sound. A stylus in a groove has to vibrate the Bass & Treble all @ once - &tc.
On the other hand - a record groove or tape magnetism are Analogous to a Sound Wave: no Sampling sections sliced out of the Sound Wave to turn into numbers... It's a matter for Science to tell us how they actually compare for Reproduction...

Anita, good morning! Nova Scotia is tops! I know of Buddy. Saw him play in Cape Breton. Saw Natalie in NYC, and introduced myself afterwards, since I have family roots in Cape Breton.

Bye bye Heidee! QUick question, Yeti Bob do you think Garageband is better to work with than Audacity?
Avatar 8:50am
YETI BOB:

Buddha: I've never used GarageBand so I can't say. It's supposed to be pretty easy though, might be a good idea to try it if you have a copy

Oh my gosh! I've seen Natalie and Donnell Leahy perform many times! Their children are amazing! I'm their biggest fan. I would love to see them in Cape Breton. I believe they live on a farm in Ontario.

Revolution Rabbit et al: re the digital/analog debate. I recall an old interview with Dylan where he was asked to weigh in on digital recording technology. His answer was along the lines of “I like the sound all blended together.”
