Do they have music in Turks and Caicos? Of course they do! "Ripsaw is a musical genre which originated in the Turks and Caicos Islands, specifically in the Middle and North Caicos. A very closely related variant, rake-and-scrape, is played in the Bahamas. Its most distinctive characteristic is the use of the common handsaw as the primary instrument"

I noticed in a couple of recent daily-paper comic strips, the authors still had accordion stuck in its goofy, nerdy, widely mocked and unwelcome status. Seemed strange -- a bluntly dated, wrong note and missed-boat perspective, given how common and great the instrument's profile has been for years now in music that plenty of people are exposed to or making. Aside from fresher hearings, I even enjoy several-decades-old clips of Myron Floren kickin' ASS on it.

David (in London):

I just had an annoying cold sales call on my personal mobile, so I held it to the speaker and the person at the other end had a good blast of Stazione Manouche. It was almost a minute before the call ended, so I assume the person on the other end must have been enjoying it.

Of course, by "close," I mean just over 1,000 miles.

Benin. Great stuff, I'm putting on my best boubou, right now.

Did the inventors of the Hang copy the principles of the calabash?

"Legends of Benin" is also a favorite. Analog Africa put out some great discs

As someone who works in academic publishing, I have to guess that *someone* has used "scato-socio-logical" in print already.

Can't think about Benin without thinking about the Kingdom of Dahomey. And one can't think about the Kingdom of Dahomey without, of course, thinking about Klaus Kinski. Now can we, now can we, now can we? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra_Verde

Here's some "ifs". If Klaus Kinski were still alive, and if Donald Trump got convicted of something serious, the best sentence would be exile on a vey small island with Kinski and minimal supplies and shelter where they'd have to survive together.

Thanks, NGH!

And SM Ken gets to continuously remix Herzog's commentary on the raw footage.

@b/p - oh Kinski was a piece of work, no doubt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm

@still b/p, that sounds like the best season of Survivor ever. And maybe put them in Cambodia (the location where they got the most injuries and infections). I mean, almost every season is intentionally cast w/a "crazy person" with no emotional intelligence, but that would really take the cake.
