I would have clutched at anything that looked like a lifeline that morning. I swallowed the stuff. For a moment I felt as if somebody had touched off a bomb inside the old bean and was strolling down my throat with a lighted torch, and then everything seemed suddenly to get all right. The sun shone in through the window; birds twittered in the tree-tops; and, generally speaking, hope dawned once more.__Bertie Wooster

Speaking of higher beings, I could not recommend more strongly watching James Erskine's new Billie Holiday documentary titled "Billie." Absolutely gobsmacking footage I've never seen before. And the film is based on the audio recordings of interviews a journalist conducted in the mid-'70s as she was preparing to write a book about Billie Holiday. And she spoke with quite a few historical figures who tell some riveting stories about Billie, her life and times. It is STUPIFYING. A must see.

And, of course, that clip from Sound of Jazz is included in the film. The film presents interviews with a number of people who stated that Billie and Lester were never lovers. They were more like sister and brother. From the nuances of Billie's life that the film puts into context, I believe them. Would never have believed it before.

A final kick in the butt from 2020 is the death of jazz pianist Frank Kimbrough. An excellent "mainstream" musician, he played with the Maria Schneider orchestra through most of its existence and also released a surprisingly good 6-CD set of the complete Thelonious Monk a couple of years ago. He was only 64 and died suddenly, probably of a heart attack. www.wbgo.org...

Crap, @LG, really liked Frank Kimbrough (that Monk set IS really nice).
Hoping for a better 2021...

TDK60, good luck today. I received a test pack last Wednesday, supposed to order collection as soon as received, unfortunately the system is closed until 8am tomorrow!

The last musician death of 2020 that I heard was the superlative bassist Eugene Wright (who played, most notable, with Dave Brubeck), at 97.
