Familiar & forgotten gems from 50-plus years of music on the darker side, shoegaze, synthpop, goth, psychedelia, darkwave, with unapologetic detours into 70s pop. In a dark night of the soul, it's always 3 o'clock in the morning.

Btw, my Dark Night of the Soul pre-show Vinyl Warm-up has indeed become a regular thing for me - maybe it was in anticipation of a 7 hour show (well it wasn't as I did not know about it until now) but this time I spread it over the course of two nights: so on Monday, Moody Blues was on the menu with Seventh Sojourn & To Our Children's Children's Children, whereas today was a Donovan Tuesday with Sunshine Superman and Barabajagal. I'll have to do this again on Xmas Eve, though with no Xmas music (I have very few Xmas vinyls, basically all of 'em have been inherited from my mam).

Empty bottle was half empty, tide was low, and I was thirsty

Always making eyes, well she wasn't making eyes

So I sidled up beside her, settled down and shouted, "Hi there"
My name's Stewart Ransom Miller, I'm a serial lady-killer"

I think there were timber concerns, @Cha Cha? My dad's more immediate branch was in Odessa and emigrated from there around 1905. Ended up as tobacco farmers in Connecticut, but my dad's dad rebelled and became a geological engineer and tried to make it as a writer while exploring the South Seas [sic and !]. My dad's mother died when he was young, and his father was lost at sea trying to sail from Tahiti to Fiji by himself. Thus, the eventual stepping in by his cousin's family.

The paradox is the reductive simplicity of the riff is what makes it a breakthrough : Pop & Rawk are so often about Sounds - often electronic ones.
Like distortion is counterintuitively a simplification of the soundwave - chopping off bits of it to make like a pure electronic impulse - closer to a synthesizer. As soon as guitars were electric it was inevitable amps would be overdriven - there's Howlin' Wolf tracks in 1954 that have it. Right after The Kinks of course TheWho work with Jim Marshall to make the truly large Amos & it's all fond but the screaming. But there were also Surf players like DickDale pushing it with Fender Amos in Cali... Every time I listen to Fools Paradise it's like history gets rewritten !...

Now that we're getting political, you all should read Elizabeth Anderson's Tanner Lectures from 2015: https://tannerlectures.utah.edu/Anderson%20manuscript.pdf

@coel he runs a songwriting factory in Sweden or some place like that. They have a bunch of songwriters that sit around and crank out a hit song every 4 hours or so, Their approach is to put the hook in the first 10 seconds or so, or else they'll lose the listener. "Martin has written or co-written 23 Billboard Hot 100 number-one songs, most of which he has also produced or co-produced, including Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" (2008), Maroon 5's "One More Night" (2012), Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space" (2014), and The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" (2019). Martin is the songwriter with the third-most number-one singles on the chart, behind only Paul McCartney (32) and John Lennon (26). In addition, he has the second-most Hot 100 number-one singles as a producer, 21, behind George Martin, who had achieved 23 by the time of his death
