Well this (Spirits Having Flown) is an OK BeeGees song. I've always assumed that pretty much everything after they started doing the disco was not with biting with.

All This Making Love sounds like ELO. That's a good thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm

Damn! Robin's Reign was such an innovative album.

So one thing that really stood out to me in the Bee Gees doc was the commentary about the disco sucks movement being rooted in racist and homophobic beliefs. I'd never heard this before and was intrigued. Is this one guy's opinion or is this a widely accepted view?

@m, there is an ongoing discussion in Chicago on social media about the Disco Demolition. I'm in Chicago now but wasn't here then. Some think it was racist, others think it was drunken stupid fun. Probably it was both and then some.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
McGroovey:

@m I would definitely say it's true that there was a racist+homophobic element to disco sucks. Rock was definitely long-haired white kids with guitars, trying not to seem gay.

I can't remember which show, but someone on WFMU discussed the racism and homophobia of "disco sucks" a few years ago. It makes sense, esp. considering how much 70s rock is very performatively, fakely ultra-masculine (I call it "dong rock"), sounding to me like it was made by guys who were insecure about sexuality and masculinity (though I'm obvs biased since I can't stand that stuff).

At lot of Disco Demo was a very popular DJ at the time telling people what to do and they did it. It was a radio station gimmick with a very dark underbelly. And it was a waste of perfectly good records. Somebody bought all those records which assumes they liked those records so I don't know where those records came from. Did the white teenage blockheads steal them from their sisters?

@Tim in SF. "Odessa" was later re-released as a single LP and then again as a deluxe 3-disc set. My fave off the album was a song about a harried southern California family man with 15 kids who goes away on a Sunday drive, only to return home and find he now has 35 kids! This was "Marly-Purt Drive." Jose Feliciano had a minor hit with it and Lulu, Maurice Gibb's ex-wife also recorded it.

For other ignoramus out there:
lulz Lulz.. is a corruption of L.O.L., which stands for laugh out loud. It's what you do things for. A corruption of lol. Lulz is a typographical subversion of the word "lol", meaning to Laugh Out Loud, thus emphasising the humour derived from the subject by way of making the original word sillier. Lulz is awesome.

This Summer Magic track is lovely. Apropos of nothing I just got an e-mail from Mysteries of Life, they just put out a single, LP coming up. That's sort of High Water Marks in its unexpected visit from an old friend-ness.

This song's release happened to coincide with some of my first-ever crushes, so it had special meaning for me.

Pseu, this medley of harmonic power pop is the cherry on today's ice cream sundae. Thanks so much for stumulating that part of our brains that responds in a very special way to this kind of music. See ya next week!
