Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from November 27, 2020 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

It would be fun to rewrite the lyrics of all the Abba songs in ways that contradict the originals. Not as spoofs but opposite to the moods of the original.

Is this Jenny surprisingly chipper?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm
Webhamster Henry:

My father told me he got to see Lady In The Dark for free because he was a soldier. The show had the showstopping Tschaikovsky specialty number by Danny Kaye, but the Saga of Jenny was staged like a strip tease and brought down the house!

It's kind of sad that the short length of 78 recordings restrains the number of verses and choruses, some of which were reseved for encores. Fortunately, it sounds like there was a b side for this one!
Avatar 8:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

In the upcoming mic break I'm about to say this was from the original 1927 Broadway cast album, but it was actually from the 1943 revival, which this song was written for- the cast album just calls itself original because they didn't do cast albums yet in 1927 (I should have realized that.) This is the last song Lorenz Hart ever wrote
Avatar 8:30pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: I remember listening to this as a teen on the Sirius XM Broadway channel and being amazed at how long it was and wondering why...now I know it was for encore reasons

Do I NEED Aimee Mann's Bachelor #2 on vinyl, tough decision, I tell you...
(Great set, btw!)

thanks :D
Avatar 🎭 8:37pm

@doctorj, I saw a Record Store Day LP for $24 that had an artist I heard for the first time a week ago on Give the Drummer Some. But I then found a used CD for $8, so mission accomplished. (Artist died long ago, so I have no guilt about royalties.)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm

"I regret buying that on vinyl," said nobody ever!

But where am I going to put all of these..
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm

Anyway, I recently got hold of Whatever on CD and it's splendid (end of Aimee Mann thread hijack)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm

Mustapfa ? sounds like Lucifer! That would be a different show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
doctorjazz:

@LG, I have that album on CD, (love Aimee Mann), so this falls absolutely into the category of OCD. And, it sold out, and if have to pay extra on eBay.
OK, I'll drop it too, enjoying the music with my wife and MT daughter.
Avatar 🎭 8:48pm
Listener Gregory:

@diciassette, I have said that when getting into the car and having a yet to listen to an LP on a long drive. New cars don't have CD players, much less turntables, and that is going to kill me.

Bronwyn, I suspect you of trying to pervert the morals of the young with today's show.

Some cars connect to your phone now, via Bluetooth or usb, and will play music on the phone, which I've been utilizing (many new vinyl releases come with a digital download included, as does Amazon and Bandcamp).

That Blue Moon was quite interesting—not the usual arrangement in the background. Tormé is a cut above the average.

jerry lee here is doing that annoying pop singer thing where he doesn't do the octave jump for "somewhere" and sings the same note twice instead, which makes harold arlen's ghost cry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm

Took me a bit, but I acquired a taste for Torme. And I love this Jerry Lee!

(yeah, he cheated, but it's so Jerry Lee, even the cheat)
