Good evening Irene, hello one and all. Great photo. Just put the tree up, it’s way too early but I am embracing Christmas this year

Stunning set, Irene, thank you

I've got this Euphorbia that's grown to almost 6 feet tall (just measured it at 55"). I'm not sure what to do with it - it needs not only a bigger pot but, soon, a bigger room! Anyone here familiar with care of these plants?
Avatar 12:26pm

Thanks kindly, johnc. Irene's show is the drug for me! Well this, and a fattie, and we're all set!

Yeti, I have a plant that's turning into a tree. Don't know what to do with it.
Avatar 🥁 12:30pm
YETI BOB:

@TDK: Is it a euphorbia? Or something else?
Avatar 🥁 12:32pm
YETI BOB:

Euphorbs are weird, look like cactus but totally unrelated, and their sap is toxic so i'm a little afraid of this plant, to be honest!
Avatar 12:32pm
TDK60:

Yeti, It's a "money tree" or Pachira aquatica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
listener james from westwood:

@YETI BOB You must be doing something right with it for such a huge plant! Not sure if you can cut the top off of those and replant it as with more treelike/stalk-based plants like Dieffenbachia or your viney plants like pothos or Syngonium.
Avatar 12:36pm
TDK60:

Irene, I plan to do nothing, don't like Thanksgiving anyway. (I don't mind family get-togethers just the US holiday.)
Avatar 🥁 12:38pm
YETI BOB:

@james: It's in a nice south-facing window so it gets a lot of sun. I could try cutting it but there's that toxic sap so I keep just letting it grow - it's fallen a few times and it's propped up with a stick.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Michael 98145:

in our mild climate, euphorbia is an outdoor plant. we always cut it back after it bloomed. but, yes that sticky sap is terrible.
Avatar 12:50pm
TDK60:

..oh ok, maybe I'll have a vegan turkey sandwich and some cranberry sauce!
Avatar 🥁 12:50pm
βrian:

You might try an Acer saccharum. The sap is quite appealing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Irene Trudel:

TDK60, I know what you mean. I sort of like the family get-together but it often comes with a lot of baggage. We originally planned to visit friends upstate but decided against it. I'm cooking and we'll just have to figure out how to deal with the leftovers.
Avatar 🥁 12:53pm

Is a a turkey still considered vegan if it has eaten a few grasshoppers in it's time?

TDK60:

..but who knows? Maybe there's some "out" concerto for prepared out-of-tune autoharp or some such. Somebody check..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Irene Trudel:

I only got to see Odetta once at the Newport Folk Festival near the end of her life but she was really mesmerizing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Brian in UK:

There is a delightful track by Odetta 'Waltzing Me All the Way Home' on Stephin Merritt's The 6ths album Hyacinths & Thistles. A DJ's nightmare to pronounce! He also references Monica & Ken in the thanks column.
Avatar 1:34pm
TDK60:

That fest was in 1976, Irene. The John Henry Festival, run by the late Ed Cabbell. I was in my 20s and wild.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Irene Trudel:

That sounds really cool, TDK60! Brian, thanks for the tip! I'll have to look that one up for another day.
Avatar 1:38pm
Stork:

OMG, Brian in the UK I'd forgotten that was Odetta singing that! That really stunned me when I checked the liner notes. The 6ths was a band wholly formed to stymie people's s ability to pronounce the band name or either of their albums (the other one is called Wasps' Nests).
Avatar 1:41pm
Stork:

The Chocolate Drops are just wunderschön!
Avatar 1:51pm

<- that John Henry fest may have been '77. Just found for the first time a photo of my pal Ed Cabbell on a horse.

Saw the Dalton doc last week. Very sad film. Junky blues. Left me with a creepy feeling about Tim Hardin and his bad influence on her. She did have a few good companions in her life but she was a slow moving freight train on her path to destruction.
