Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
aloha, Ruth, theia, DjLorraine, WR, Wendy del Formaggio, Bergey, Threemoons, Little Danny, Andres, Franco Twinkie, chresti, medson, phat, Carmichael (i almost typed *whispers aloha*), bigplanetnoise, Corey, mariano, listener 126464, Snayle, Gina Bacon, slugluv1313, Andrea Egert! (i just typed all of your names so instead of posting some (more inane comments)) and i agree with Little Danny re: Caira Paravel
I’m a little late after the YLT track (sorry, dinner cleanup!) and maybe old hat to the listeners here–but I only recently found out that Georgia’s parents were incredible animators and they collaborated with Dizzy Gillespie! Some of their work is on the Criterion Channel and make sure to catch the interview segment with Georgia and her siblings.
@Matt Fiveash: Indeed! It's a beautiful thing. Right now I have some concord grape shrub "steeping" on the counter. My local farm-stand imported some Michigan concord grapes, so I took advantage.
Oh, you're in Topeka now, Uncle M? Never been there myself. When I was in Omaha I had some friends that went to college in Lawrence. They always spoke fondly of the town.
phat: Ah, cool. I went to UNO, never got the full-on campus life like at UNL. Used to love driving down there to go to an Indian restaurant called The Oven, though there was also one in Omaha.
Franco: Don't recall that one. The two big landmarks when I was there were the Woodman Tower and of course the Mutual of Omaha building. There was a big Campbell's Soup factory too.
Some years ago, the department that overseas the station decided that it should function to prepare students to go to work for clear channel and adventure was kicked to the curb.
phat: No way! I worked briefly at the Indian Oven in the Old Market, also worked at V. Mertz for three or so years. One of the best jobs, was so much fun. Also worked at Jethro's for a time, that weird little shop with the weed-pipe counter.
8:52pm
phat:
@Franco Twinkie that coffee pot is big in my family lore.
@Gaylord: oh man, totally agree. Whenever I'm within spitting distance of being in the mood for something like
"Premiers Symptomes," there only really exists "Premiers Symptomes" to satisfy. But maybe that's its subtle genius.
phat: Whoa! Hadn't thought of that place in years till just now. Was a late-night coffee-and-grub place for students. I'll have to look it up. Heard Mr. C's closed too, that's sad.
Ohhh, I never realized one of the Caniglias owned it, phat. Wow. What band/s did you play in? I really liked the small, cozy scene there. Cellophane Ceiling, Mousetrap, The Acorns... probably some more in my memory banks somewhere. Oh, Beyond the Pale, traditional Irish music.
These last few tracks sound great. They have taken away the slight guilt of buying a new amplifier. ;)
9:06pm
Andres:
Some guilt here also for being visually distracted by KC-LV duel. Also visually distracted by that can't be forgotten Push Push album cover I had to search out.
You weren't kidding about the adagio, Gaylord. Beautiful. Assuming that this minor-key part is the adagio...
Uncle M: It's like that with Dickie Brennan and the Brennan family in general in New Orleans. Actually a good thing, guaranteed level of quality.
9:07pm
phat:
@mariano at that time I was in a band called Middle Monkey. And the scene there and in Lincoln at the time was really, really great. Mousetrap are releasing some stuff soon. I think it's reissues. I LOVED Acorns, too. Lincoln and Omaha cross-pollinated a lot then. Not so much anymore, although I think the metal scenes in the two towns are more together.
In a way, Vivaldi gets a bad rap for being consistently good. Telemann, one of my favorites, is consistently boring, which is why I have such affection for his music. JS Bach was also consistent, but transcendentally so.
phat: That's so cool! I got to know Alex from Acorns a bit, both from going to shows, then we had a class together at UNO. What a talented guy. Good to know Mousetrap's still doing their thing :) Did you know 13 Nightmares? They put on a hell of a show I saw at the short-lived Inter-Arts Project, a club run by my then-roomie and a guy named Mark Kemper.
Yes, it can be. One show is in the living room, other's in the kitchen.
9:13pm
phat:
@mariano oh yes, 13 Nightmares are friends of mine. When they became Mercy Rule their first show was opening for Middle Monkey. I was even roommates with their drummer for a bit, after he left Mercy Rule and before he went to NYC and lost his mind.
better half and i were just discussing mispelling that exact word (knowing fully well it's wrong before i let my fingers do the walking/thinking) :D oh, brother
Uncle M: I do remember the Howard St, but yeah, I remember you telling me you were there a decade or so before me. In the days when Con-Agra Park was still Jobber's Canyon ;)
I first met Matt...he must have been 12 or 13. He was with his dad at an Elvis Costello show in KC and I went to say hi to Charlie. I predate the Hiccups and the Cutouts. Charlie's band was Rock Therapy when I first knew him.
i noticed and thought just i blew my own intended joke, but decided it worked as being vaguely complimentary, then mariano made it obvious (thank you, mariano) :D
9:47pm
phat:
@mariano oh yes, Drastic. They've changed into something like a coffee shop lately or something. Their manager is a friend. Singer for For Against
@Uncle Michael i worked at Twisters, which was what happened to Dirt Cheap. Homer's bought them.
9:51pm
J&E in Ithaca NY:
Great show! This set reminds of the glory days of KWXY-FM back when they still had live DJs.
9:51pm
highway:
Tomorrow I'll virtually play for my high school class "Sympathy for the Devil"... and read J. G. Ballards " The assassination of JFK considered as a downhill motor Race"...also a happy birthday to the great Benjamin Written...Gaylord Fields Forever...
Wow, some kind of holiday in eclecticism tonight! I'm in awe of how it's all worked. Late to the board but I've been listening all the way. Thanks Gaylord!
phat: That's so cool that we knew some of the same people. Small world. I really loved that tight-knit scene, the motley collection of punks, hippies, headbangers, and everything in between all hanging together, no genre tribalism.
ARB: Wow, another one!
Thank you Gaylord, I'm always blown away by your sets and amazed by how little I know about music after all these years :) Thanks to Ruth and the Crew, take care all o' yous!
Thanks to everyone for the kind words about tonight's program! It is always a pleasure to play this music for an audience of radio friends that make me so happy to be doing this for you all and not just for myself. Have a great week and a safe holiday for those who celebrate!
