Welcome Sean and all time-changers listening in! Lots more guitar instrumentals coming your way today, and by no means a definitive selection.

YETI BOB:

Hi Irene. I'm looking forward to this. I think "definitive selection" is not even remotely possible - you'd have to narrow it down somehow. Last week we heard Fahey and Fripp - the guitar is a whole wide world in itself. You could do this every week pretty much forever and not run out of great guitar music to play.

YETI BOB:

He played at the Hideout in Chicago which is just about my favorite place in the world to see music. This was maybe 4,5 years ago. He played on the front porch instead of inside the club. There was a small but very devoted audience. It was just a little bit chilly, a fall afternoon if I recall correctly. The music was transportive.

Avatar 12:16pm
TDK60:

Good to hear early Santana, and Larry C. here; he tears it up.
Avatar 🥁 12:16pm
YETI BOB:

He was playing a very interesting kind of guitar, the neck seemed like an extension of the body, and it sounded super-resonant. I found out it's called a Weissenborn guitar, they were made in the 1920s-30s and are sought-after.
Avatar 🥁 12:17pm
YETI BOB:

I modestly approached Daniel after he finished playing, wanting to tell him how much I loved the show and to ask him about the guitar - I'm super-interested in old and unusual guitars. I asked him if the neck was indeed hollow.
Avatar 🥁 12:18pm
YETI BOB:

He tells me, yes, it's a hollow neck, it's called a Weissenborn, and he hands it to me - "Here - do you want to play it?".
Avatar 🥁 12:19pm
YETI BOB:

I was just floored. I did not let him pass it to me, I handed it right back, "Thanks! but ....". I didn't want to play Daniel Bachman's guitar in front of an audience right after he finished his set!!! But what an incredibly generous and friendly gesture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Irene Trudel:

Thanks for that story about Daniel, YETI BOB! I had him on my WFMU show a few times and found him to be the sweetest, most modest human. An enormous talent! (And, yes, Daniel is in the mix soon!)

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Good morning-ish, Irene!
Avatar 🥁 12:30pm
YETI BOB:

If we all make it another 40 years maybe I'll be ready to play Daniel's Weissenborn at the Hideout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Irene Trudel:

Howdy to you, Nulsh and to Summer and Michael and Sylvia! glad you're here for part 2. YETI BOB, that about describes me. As you can see, I have two nice guitars but I virtually stopped playing because of hand issues. Now that I've had carpal tunnel surgery it might be time to try and get back in playing shape. Which is just adequate.
Avatar 🥁 12:36pm
YETI BOB:

I play to relax and enjoy myself. One of the things I've learned over the years is that you don't have to be great at something to enjoy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Irene Trudel:

TDK60, as I said, those two nice guitars pictured have remained unplayed for a while. I pretended to play a few tunes but I'm more of an appreciator of those who really have talent.

Good point Michael. Mark R, yes I need to dip more into that one. Lots of great playing on it. Sean, I'm a bit jealous! Never got to see Akkerman but I see he put out an album about a year ago. Must investigate more!
Avatar 🥁 12:56pm
YETI BOB:

I can't say enough good things about this entire Imaginational Anthem series. The one curated by Ryley Walker was really interesting (it features Shane Parish, Kendra Amalie and Mathew Rolin among others). And Shane Parish's "Undertaker Please Drive Slow" was just devastatingly beautiful. And I also want to mention my friend Nathaniel Braddock ... and ... and ... and ... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Irene Trudel:

YETI BOB, I've found so many great tracks through Tompkins Square. Also, Josh, who runs the label is constantly feeding me new stuff. He knows my tastes (and has great taste himself)!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm

Excellent point, Irene, I say the same to folks here in the UK, if you don't vote then you have nada to complain about

This is cool--I don't think enough people have explored the outer reaches of possibility on the pedal steel.

Experimental Pedal Steel makes me need to mention Susan Alcorn, who is just an absolute genius. Irene, you could do part 3 with just female guitarists :)

Mark R:

I concur, Ms. Trudel, I believe FZ is highly underrated (including by himself) as a guitar player. Very original, one of the few of that era whose style wasn't built on a foundation of stolen blues licks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Stanley:

You have a good point, Mark R.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm

  2:07pm
Mark R:

I'd say maybe Robert Fripp being the other I can think of.
Avatar 🥁 2:10pm
YETI BOB:

Mark R: Michael Karoli in Can? Fred Frith in Henry Cow? I'd say a lot of prog-rock and krautrock was deliberately trying to avoid the blues - with mixed results, sometimes great, sometimes horrible! (And I say that as a huge fan of Fripp and King Crimson)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:11pm

Late to the party. Hi Irene, hello all. Looks like it's been a beautiful show so far! Chuck Johnson played to a full house for the night I put on in Stirling. It was the 'Balsams' tour, and he went straight through without clapping breaks, with everyone completely silent mesmerised. Venue were annoyed that people weren't going to the bar.
