Handy Haversack:

Several years ago, Kate's band was playing a gig at Trash in Brooklyn. The other band fell through, so the booker asked a friend if he could do a set to fill the slot. That friend was Kevn Kinney of DnC. I grew up in Atlanta. I saw DnC probably six times? in high school. I had met them. I woke up extra early to get tix to their shows (terrified at the size of the crowd also there and confused by how lame they were, until the Turtles dude, who knew me, told me they were all there for New Kids tix and to go home, he'd print out the first to DnC tix for me before doing any New Kids tix). We went to get our tapes and T-shirts signed when their one crossover album came out. We were *into* this band. For me, DnC and New Model Army were huge influences on me -- aesthetically but also morally, I think, which is politically, in terms of empathy and disdain for icons and other stuff. And they were southern without being horrid and also just rocked. And then I got a whole evening where Kevn Kinney basically said, "Wow, it's great to meet someone who's been a fan for so long. What do you want to hear?" And at the end of the set I got to tell him what his music had meant to me and how grateful I was and how I thought that it had helped me be a better person than I might have, which is pretty good for art. And his wife approached me later and told me how much that talk had meant to him. And it's still one of the best memories of my life.

tl;dr: Thanks, Julie!
