Dallam Dougou Live (plus a few new releases)

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Thirty minutes of new releases, then a live set by Jumbie Records recording artists Dallam-Dougou, engineered by Irene Trudel.

Dallam Dougou's music is a unique hybrid of African, Hungarian and jazz elements. "Dallam" means melody in Hungarian and "Dougou" means land or city in a bunch of West African languages, such as Ouagadougou. The band just released its debut cd New Destiny on the brand new Jumbie Records label. Jumbie launched with two other great cds, a debut by the jazz-centered but worldly Imaginary Homeland and a special live recording by the brilliant Ghanaian gyil (xylophone) player Bernard Woma and trio. (Click here to hear Bernard Woma when he performed on this radio program in 2001)

The players:

Raul Rothblatt (cello & bass; conceptual mastermind) – composer for dance and film and author of many musical theatre pieces including The Little Mushroom.  Member of Eletfa Hungarian folk band, who bring the Hungarian tanchaz style (as you may know from the band Muzsikas) to NY and NJ, and Jumbie Records co-founder.

Abou Sylla (balafon) – former member of the legendary Ballets Africains of Guinea and one of the greatest balafon
players anywhere.  Featured on the Smithsonian Folkways cd Badenya. A member of Super Manden (featuring Abdoulaye Diabate).

Kálmán "Öcsi" Magyar (fiddle & kontra
) – also leader of Eletfa. Former member of the world-renowned Duquesne Tamburitzans and recently released his first solo cd, Kálmán Magyar Exposed (on which he plays all the instruments) – and he manages to squeeze in a very fancy day job.  Good bio and cd info at http://www.tamburaland.com/bands/kalman

Tsafrir Lichtenshtein (drums) – all the way from Israel to your living room

Avram Fefer (clarinet & alto sax) – Leader of the Avram Fefer Trio, Avram has several cds to his name and has played with many jazz luminaries and had acid jazz hits in Europe – among other things.  Info on his cds, upcoming gigs and more: http://www.avramfefer.com

Sylvain Leroux (flutes) – with Bailo Bah, leader of the Fula Flute ensemble, who are appearing at Carnegie Hall Zankel Hall on February 28.  Also plays with Super Manden (see above) and Abdoulaye Diabate's electric African band Source (who appear the first Friday of every month at the Zinc Bar).

Steve Espinola (keyboards – in absentia) – in his own words: “Songwriter, pianist,
shortwave radio virtuoso and inventor of the 19-string "Grand Slam" Electric Tennis Racket.”  In addition to his solo work Steve has played with the Moldy Peaches, Steve Wynn, trance-healing instrument-makers The Listeners and many others.  Background, gig info etc: http://members.aol.com/spespinola/stevemusic.htm
