RE artists visas price increase. It actually makes sense if you're thinking in the shortsighted nationalistic protectionist terms these assholes do. Make it more expensive for foreign artists to come in and more bookings are available for Americans. It's also keeping out foreign perspectives. It's an attempt to close the culture and it's very frightening.

Paul Robeson @ 3:41, I heard a portion of that on WBAI not too long ago. he wasn't intimidated buy them in the least bit. and even though he wasn't what they were trying to accuse of; it was absolutely beneath him to answer any of their questions. he was a well-educated man and knew his rights. well spoken and articulated, and defended himself well.

Sheila, thanks for sharing that. Scary. Glad you were able to get out. Also appreciate you listing the patterns that you see in hindsight, and that may help others get to safety. Those patterns - geographic separation, need for control, penalties for free thought, commitment to manipulation, and obsession with youth... all of those are present in the Big Tech companies in Silicon Valley. Google reportedly is building its own sealed-off town so that its (young) employees can stay under the watchful eye of their employer 24/7.

There is no hyperbole here: I've heard from listeners that they know kids (of neighbors or family members) who have gone off to work at Google and then come back "changed" - obsessed with the company, spouting buzzwords, emotionally distant. It's absolutely a straight line from how employees are treated to the manipulations foisted on users through Google products.

At my old job at a large midwestern university library, I was able to inter library borrow Queen of Siam on vinyl from another university library. As I was walking back to my desk with Lydia's album tucked in my arms, my boss said "Oooh, Linda Ronstadt!". I had a friend dong temp work at 7 WTC. I was working by Gramercy Park. We managed to meet up at 7th Ave. and 14th St. and start walking north. We planned to meet his partner at 59th and 8th -- and were so confused we forgot there IS NO 59th and 8th! Found her eventually in Columbus Circle and walked across the Queensboro to home.
