Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Doug Schulkind:

Back in around 1996, WFMU had a benefit concert in the old Westbeth complex in lowerish Manhattan. We all got there early to set up and perform sound checks for a bunch of the bands. At one point, Paul Simon came down some stairs out of nowhere all fuming and bitching about the noise we were making. He was in an upper practice room working on rehearsals for The Capeman. I will never forget how incredibly assholish he was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Webhamster Henry:

I guess he's not a swag-for-lifer.
Avatar 7:28pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hahaha what a story!!! Yeah I've never heard anything good about either Simon or Garfunkel personality-wise which is a shame considering how beautiful their work together is (don't like their solo careers tho)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Webhamster Henry:

Artie used to get arrested for pot in his car up here near Woodstock. It was a tradition!
Avatar 7:36pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Now I want to have a Simon and/or Garfunkel sighting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Doug Schulkind:

A friend once got picked up by Art while hitchhiking in Vermont!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Doug Schulkind:

Art was driving some huge fancy car. I can't remember. A Rolls Royce or a Lincoln Continental or something. My friend reported (this was in the '70s) that Art seemed sad.
Avatar 7:40pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I want to have a drive through Vermont in a Rolls Royce with a sad Art Garfunkel
Avatar 7:40pm

I did once sing backing vocals for Peter Yarrow

Hi all, listening but still working.

Dean:

I'm sure you're being way too polite, Doug, with the "ish" part.

To my mind/ear/gut, Garfunkel is leaps and bounds the more musical of the two.

Maybe a WFMU maven can answer this: Why was an Art Garfuncle song in the middle of the Watership Down movie?

@Brownwyn. Did you draw a crayon map of Luxembourg?
  7:59pm

What's the flat of Luxembourg look like?

*flag
Avatar 8:02pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

No but I did give a presentation in Luxembourg in 7th grade. Its flag looks like the French flag turned on its side- it's red on top, white in the middle, blue on the bottom
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:08pm

That would make a great cake! Much easier than a French cake.

Webhamster Henry:

Speaking of Guy Bolton, I'd like to suggest "BRING ON THE GIRLS!", the probably rather fictionalized auto bio of P.G. Wodehouse & Guy Bolton about their life in the theatre. It's reallllyy funnny! Limelight Press.

The Witch of Capri!
Avatar 🎭 8:20pm
Listener Gregory:

Minor correction: Wodehouse is pronounced "Woodhouse." Also, "Bring on The Girls" is indeed excellent, as are most Wodehouse books, IMHO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

Many if not all the plays mentioned in the book are on Archive.org. archive.org...

Thank you Gregory, I had never actually heard anyone say his name out loud before haha

I've been listening to the show for some weeks, but it is on when I'm making and eating dinner, so I haven't been commenting. So let me say while I'm here that this is a wonderful show, Bronwyn! You really do a fantastic job.
Avatar 🎭 8:23pm
Listener Gregory:

@Bronwyn, I mispronounced it for about 25 years, until "Bertie and Jeeves" made it onto PBS, and the announcer corrected me.
Avatar 8:24pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Thank you for the kind words Gregory :D so glad you are enjoying the show!!

This song (Let's Evolve) is fun!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm

I'm not sure why Let's Evolve made me thing of Napoleon. Maybe it's in the same spirit?
Avatar 8:42pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Let's Evolve is one of those lyrics I wish I'd written. They don't write em like that anymore
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm

I like how you're playing lots of early 20th Century stuff.

Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: I realized everything I was playing was super old so I had to close it out with some wacky new stuff lol
Avatar 8:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: I love how that's one of two examples of vacuum being turned into vac-u-um for a rhyme in a showtune (Stephen Schwartz also did this for the Disney movie Enchanted)
Avatar 8:59pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

we are going into OT tonight thanks to the weirdness at the beginning

Archive listened, in part during dinner tonight so will probably listen again to get every delicious bit. Oopsy, the abrupt cut off. Would have loved hearing your back announcement for the last set.

Fabio show. Your show, in general, is a real gem. Thanks, Bronwyn!
