Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
@Gaylord, I was lucky enough to pick up the Metaphonics: The Complete Field Works Recordings box set from Temp Res when they dug a few more out this spring. 7 LPs and a hardcover book. If you haven't, give it a hear. I think you'll dig. You can jump to all 7 volumes from this link. Enjoy! fieldworks.bandcamp.com
All of a sudden it's a total cricket symphony outside, maybe because it's so cool outside today. I've never heard so many. It sure goes well with your show, Gaylord! This is magical.
@Mr. Pumpy: Hmm, maybe some of them are cicadas, now that you mention it. I'm not very up on my bugs! I'm getting to know birds better. Maybe bugs are next.
Yeah, The Flying Lizards are way more than a one trick pony. Their s/t album is a gem. One of my all time faves.

Hi! First time commenting. I love the show. Just wanted to point out that Therese played the Thundercat song in the last hour. Great minds think alike!
@Gaylord, I'm pretty convinced a light bulb hovers over your head all the time, or at least when you do your radio show. I'm not just flattering you -- although I'm perfectly capable of doing that, too -- your show really is a highlight of my week. I so appreciate you, my friend.
KentuckyRain sounds like it wanted to be a Hit but got more moody & actually better. Makes me think of the King film about Elvis as metaphor for the U.S. - they just cruise in his old car & a film happens...
@Kevin in urbana: He was a Jersey City guy, and he's much missed. Once saw him and his boys roll up to Benny Tudino's Pizza in Hoboken in his whip to pick up some pies.
Gaylord, I just noticed the title of tonight's show. Which, nerd that I am, inspired me to look up Charlotta Spears Bass. I am glad I did. Thank you for that.
i'm wondering what to do with hummus besides dipping things into it or a sandwich...

Vic Perry:
archive crawler here lately much into your shows and Matt Fiveash too but I'm listening live for a change, Astrel K had an immediate sonic impact and this Lee Morgan is wonderful
Wendy, Gaylord caught me doing something else. it's floods 60th bday, I'm on a nin bender.
9:18pm
Ira:
If there's anyone from Don Ellis's band on this message board who performed at my high school in the early 70's who can shed any light on how in the world that happened, it would be much appreciated.
I'll pay closer attention to show titles from now on! Seriously impressive human being, Ms. Bass. Nice to be reminded of such people in challenging times.
@Gina: Another use is letting the hummus turn into a viscous putty and pulling up the Sunday comics with it for hours of fun and amusement (warning: does not work on digital newspapers).
9:25pm
Ira:
Gaylord, since I asked specifically for a reply from a member of the Don Ellis band, I'm going to assume that you were in fact part of the ensemble, and I do not want to be told otherwise.
Uncle Michael, my WFMU swag came a few weeks ago, and it included your library music comp. I sure am glad I requested it. It's so good. Thank you for putting that together.

The only thing that Leland Sundries song was missing was an 80s new wave saxophone solo.
Wonder if hummus works as paste to stick the pads on your sax keys back on - or to lubricate where sections go together...or as a desert topping *&* a floor wax...
i sure wish i'd read to the end of that post about comics transfers.
'got a bit of a mess here...

From the Desperate Bicycles wikipedia: "Vocalist Dan Wigley stands at 6 feet 8 inches tall. Making him the tallest member of any punk band until the 6'10" Tobin Balwinkel formed Flatfoot 56 in 2000."
@Gaylord Fields I read about Bacharach's writing after trying to transcribe some of his music. He wrote with no time signature and then added it when arranging. It's nuts and beautiful and explains a lot.
@Wendy: In the early 60's, many singers/producers would smooth out the time signatures, so Burt decided on producing his own songs and finding a vocalist up to the task. And did he ever!!!
Thank you, Gaylord!!! A beautiful show as always. A portion of it made for some great dog walking accompaniment. Thanks also for the Charlotta Spears Bass and Delia Derbyshire introductions.

Yeah, if she can pull off Bacharach's wacky time-signatures and make it sound flawless, she deserves mucho airplay.
