Funky, they may be homemade horns. A few years ago I'd hear Haitians jamming in Central Park, with 4 or 5 horns in a hypnotic way. I'd sit and listen.

Funky16Corners:

Thanks NGH! I thought it had a different sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am
Doug Schulkind:

@Funky16Corners
The horn-like sounds you're hearing are coming from long, metal vuvuzella-like instruments.

@Listener Gregory
Rara is a sociopolitical consciousness. It's a street-based event that attracts people through community and music.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:55am
Artie:

From Wikipedia: "Rara is a form of festival music that originated in Haiti, that is used for street processions, typically during Easter Week. The music centers on a set of cylindrical bamboo trumpets called vaccine, but also features drums, maracas, güiras or güiros, and metal bells, as well as sometimes alsos which are made from recycled metal, often coffee cans"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Doug Schulkind:

"The typical Rara orchestra consists of three drums followed by three or more bamboo instruments called banbou or vaksin, metal horns called konet, several waves of percussion players with small, hand-held instruments, and finally a chorus of singers. There is also usually a core group of performers—eithermajò jon (baton majors) or wa and renn (kings and queens)—who dance for contributions."

(I was judging plastic PVC based on videos I've seen of recent Haitian street festivals, now such materials are more common. 30+ years ago, metal would be the material of choice).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am

This (www.ucpress.edu...) appears to be the definitive popular study of Rara, but because it's a published by a university press and used as a textbook, it's awful expensive.

My mom turned 86 seven years ago. When I was a kid, she was a part-time waitress (that's what they were called back then). As her 86th approached, I had this queasy feeling that it might spell the end, i.e., she'd be 86'd.
